Dates and sites: Regional championships will be April 12 at Washington (West region), Utah (North Central region), Missouri (South Central region), Alabama (Central region), Michigan (Northeast region) and Georgia (Southeast region). The finals will be at Nebraska April 24-26.
Field: Six regional competitions consisting of six teams, five all-around competitors and one individual specialist per event are conducted to determine the 12 teams, 12 all-around competitors and event specialists to compete in the national championships. The top two teams and top two all-around competitors (who are not on the advancing team) will receive automatic berths. Event winners at the regional championship advance to the national championship (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or the all-around qualifiers.
Selection date: March 31.
2002 team champion: Alabama.
Top team contenders: Utah, UCLA, Georgia, Alabama, Nebraska.
Top individual contenders: Jamie Dantzscher, UCLA; Chelsa Byrd, Georgia; Theresa Kulikowski, Utah; Jeana Rice, Alabama; Richelle Simpson, Nebraska.
As of February 17, UCLA's Jamie Dantzscher had the highest average scores on floor (9.985), bars (9.968), vault (9.965) and the all-around (39.775). The senior is the defending vault, floor and all-around champion.
