The national office staff has been reorganized to undertake action resulting from the strategic-planning process now under way.
NCAA President Myles Brand told Executive Committee members at their April 25 meeting that he has restructured the staff to focus on a higher degree of cross-functionality. The reorganization will become effective August 1.
The new model features an increased number of senior vice-presidents who will continue to have management oversight responsibilities for their current areas, as well as new oversight duties.
Tom Jernstedt has been promoted to executive vice-president and will oversee Division I men's basketball, Division I women's basketball, and Division I baseball and football. Jernstedt also will direct an office of external affairs that includes interaction with coaches associations and the United States Olympic Committee.
Four senior vice-presidents will lead staffs that combine current groups.
Dennis Cryder will oversee a branding, broadcasting and communications group composed of the current branding, broadcasting and promotions and public affairs staffs. Jim Isch, who will be the NCAA's chief financial officer, will head a group that includes finance and operations, information technology and human resources. Judy Sweet will continue to lead the championships staff, which now will include the Hall of Champions and much of the current education services staff. As senior woman administrator, Sweet also will oversee an office for inclusiveness that primarily will address equity issues.
A fourth senior vice-president, who has yet to be appointed, will lead the governance and membership staffs. That group also will include the student-athlete reinstatement staff, which previously had been housed with enforcement services. The research staff also will be part of this group.
Other staff reporting directly to Brand in the new structure include David Price (vice-president for enforcement services), Elsa Cole (general counsel), Abe Frank (director of governmental relations) and Wally Renfro (senior advisor to the president for communications).
