Division I
Dates and sites: Regional play will be May 15-18 at campus locations, and the Women's College World Series will be May 22-26 at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.
Field: Sixty-four teams are selected for championship play. Eight teams will participate at each of eight regional sites. The Women's College World Series will include the eight regional winners.
Selection date: May 11.
2002 champion: California.
Top team contenders: Arizona, LSU, Oklahoma, Texas, UCLA, Washington.
Players to watch: Jaime Clark, Washington; Leah Gulla, Oklahoma; Alicia Hollowell, Arizona; Cat Osterman, Texas; Natasha Watley, UCLA.
Division II
Dates and sites: Regional play will be May 8-11 on the campus of competing institutions. The finals will be May 15-19 at the Wallace Sports Complex in Salem, Oregon.
Field: The championship field is 48 teams. Six teams will participate at each of eight regional sites in a double-elimination format. Regional winners advance to an eight-team, double-elimination final.
Selection date: May 5.
2002 champion: St. Mary's (Texas).
Top team contenders: Angelo State, Barry, Bloomsburg, UC Davis, North Dakota State, North Florida.
Players to watch: Jenny Bakke, North Dakota State; Kim Fujimoto, Barry; Jennifer Mackson, Grand Valley State; Amy Rosson, UC Davis; Kym Kling, St. Mary's (Texas).
Division III
Dates and sites: First-round games will be played May 9-12. The finals will be May 16-20 at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Virginia.
Field: The championship has a field of 43 teams. Five teams will compete at five regional sites and six teams at three regional sites. All regionals will be double-elimination format. Regional winners will advance to an eight-team, double-elimination final.
Selection date: May 5.
2002 champion: Ithaca.
Top team contenders: Emory, Illinois Wesleyan, Montclair State, Muskingum, Pacific Lutheran, Roanoke.
Players to watch: Christy Brewer, Alma; Mandy Carnes, Muskingum; Christine O'Brien, Emory; Crystal Sweeney, Montclair State; Jen Swope, Pacific Lutheran.
In the 2002 Division II championship, Cal St. Chico's Katie Stokx led the finals field with an ERA of 0.00 over four games and tied for top batting average of .455 with teammate Kamala Kiffe.
