The NCAA Men's Volleyball Committee has recommended an increase in the championships travel party from 18 to 22 people.

The recommendation, formulated during the committee's annual meeting July 14-16 in Indianapolis, will be forwarded to the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet for consideration.

Committee Chair Bob Krimmel, assistant director of athletics at Pennsylvania State University, said the requested increase was due to the addition of the libero player several years ago.

"We added a new position to our game with the libero player but never really made concessions for the impact this has on the dynamic of our teams," he said. "We need to give teams more flexibility to have this specialty player on the roster and a back-up as well."

Currently, the official travel party allows for 12 players in uniform and six support staff (for example, three coaches, a manager, an athletic trainer and a sports information representative). The increase would allow for 15 players in uniform and one additional support staff member who could be an institutional administrator.

The committee also met with representatives from the NCAA enforcement staff about international student-athletes and amateurism issues in the game during its annual meeting. The committee will work with NCAA staff to create an educational packet to send to coaches to illustrate the divisional differences in amateurism and reinstatement issues.

"We want to make sure that our coaches have the right information in hand to deal with international and amateurism issues," Krimmel said. "Since this is a National Collegiate championship, I think there has been some confusion regarding the rules that pertain to the various institutions in each division."
