Division I
Dates and site: The championships will be June 11-14 at Sacramento State.
Field: A total of 544 athletes will compete in the championships. Athletes qualify by finishing in the top five in each individual event and in the top three in each relay event at four regional meets May 30-31. In the decathlon and 10,000-meter run, athletes qualify directly to the national championships by reaching the automatic and provisional standards established.
Selection date: The spots remaining in the field after the automatic qualifiers are entered will be filled from the descending-order list of qualifiers June 2.
2002 team champion: LSU.
Top team contenders: Arkansas, Clemson, Florida, LSU, South Carolina, Tennessee.
Athletes to watch: Dan Ames, UCLA; Stephen Harris and Gary Kikaya, Tennessee; Brian Johnson, Southern University; Gabor Mate, Auburn; John Moffitt, LSU; Joep Tigchelaar, Florida State; Aarik Wilson, Indiana; Ryan Wilson, Southern California.
Division II
Dates and site: The championships will be May 22-24 at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.
Field: A total of 310 athletes will compete in the championships. Athletes qualify by reaching the automatic and provisional standards established for each event.
Selection date: The spots remaining in the field after the automatic qualifiers are entered will be filled from the descending-order list of provisional qualifiers May 12.
2002 team champion: Abilene Christian.
Top team contenders: Abilene Christian, Angelo State, North Carolina Central, St. Augustine's, Tarleton State, Western State.
Athletes to watch: Kevin Bartlett, Lincoln (Missouri); Ben Clark, Texas A&M-Kingsville; Olan Coleman, Tarleton State; Wilan Louis, Anwar Moore and Nathaniel McKinney, St. Augustine's; Quint Melius, Angelo State; Jean-Marie Ndikumana and Martin Okello, Abilene Christian; Orville Taylor, New York Tech; Tony Thompson, Cal State Bakersfield.
Division III
Dates and site: The championships will be May 22-24 at St. Lawrence.
Field: A total of 344 athletes will compete in the championship. Athletes qualify by reaching the automatic and provisional standards established for each event.
Selection date: The spots remaining in the field after the automatic qualifiers are entered will be filled from the descending-order list of provisional qualifiers May 19.
2002 team champion: Wisconsin-La Crosse.
Top team contenders: Calvin, Lincoln (Pennsylvania), Wisconsin-La Crosse, Wisconsin-Platteville, Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Athletes to watch: Chris Basich, Mount Union; Brett Blake, Nebraska Wesleyan; Chaz Clemons and Justin Jarmon, Lincoln (Pennsylvania); Matt Deamer, Susquehanna; Matt Groose, Wisconsin-Oshkosh; Ryan Kleimenhagen and Andy Paulsen, Wisconsin-Platteville; Joel Klooster, Calvin; Andrew Rock and Derek Toshner, Wisconsin-La Crosse.
The Division I 400-meter relay could be renamed "The Letters Race." In the last 17 years, either LSU, TCU or Texas A&M has won the event 13 times.
