University of North Carolina, Greensboro, Faculty Athletics Representative David B. Knight, who played a significant role in the NCAA's work with initial- and continuing-eligibility standards, eligibility waivers and core-course review died October 12 after a long battle with cancer.
Knight was a chemistry professor at North Carolina-Greensboro and was first individual to hold the faculty athletics representative position at the school. He was appointed in 1985.
Knight formerly chaired two important NCAA academic committees -- the Division I Academics/
Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet and the Academic Requirements Committee -- and he also was a member of the NCAA Research Committee from 1994 to 1998. He also served on the Division I Working Group to Study Basketball Issues, a 27-member committee of university presidents, conference commissioners, athletics administrators and FARs that was appointed in 1998.
Knight was a past president of the Faculty Athletics Representatives Association (FARA), having completed an eight-year term as an officer with that 900-member national organization. He was president from 1997 to 1999. He was the lead author in writing the revisions for the Faculty Athletics Representative handbook, published in September 1994 by the NCAA.
Knight graduated from the University of Louisville in 1961 with a bachelor's degree in chemistry, and he a earned master of arts in 1964 and a Ph.D. in 1966 from Duke University.
