GRADUATION RATES

1995 entering class establishes graduation-rate record

The entering Division I class of 1995 posted a graduation rate of 60 percent, the highest total since the NCAA began calculating rates with the entering class of 1984.

The rate keeps Division I student-athletes 2 percent higher than their student-body counterparts and is 2 percent higher than for the 1994 cohort. The graduation rate for the overall student body in 1995 also increased by 2 percent to 58 percent. The rate for student-athletes has been about 2 percent higher than for the student body for the last decade.

The 1995 cohort is the one for which the NCAA began requiring 13 core courses instead of 11 for eligibility.

DIVISION I

AEC cabinet tweaks proposal to strengthen continuing education

The Division I Academic Consultants and the Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet are supporting an amendment to Proposal No. 02-24-B (Proposal No. 02-24-B-2) that would require student-athletes entering their third year to have 95 percent of the grade-point average required by the institution to graduate (1.900 in most cases), as opposed to 100 percent of the GPA required to graduate in the specified degree program (2.000 or higher in some cases).

The consultants and cabinet members agree that it is more equitable to base minimum GPA requirements on institutional requirements rather than specified degree programs. They believe that the 95 percent requirement captures more "false negatives" without diluting the intent of an earlier academic-reform proposal.

Championships cabinet asks for feedback on seeding concept

The Championships/Competition Cabinet is asking sports committees to react to a bracketing principle that would allow for 25 percent of the championships field to be seeded nationally.

The cabinet believes the 25 percent seeding option gives sports committees the flexibility to reward deserving teams and develop a nationally competitive tournament without compromising costs or missed class time for student-athletes.

The proposal is based on several working principles from the cabinet's bracket/format subcommittee.

PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH

Committee on schedule to identify new NCAA president

The NCAA search committee is on track to meet its early November deadline for naming the Association's next president.

The search committee has not divulged who various candidates are, when the short list will be determined or even when the final selection will be announced, beyond an early November promise stated at the beginning of the process.

The NCAA Executive Committee has scheduled a meeting in October before its regular quarterly meeting November 1 and may be in position to announce the next president by then.

LEGISLATION

Divisions II and III to consider 52 proposals at 2003 Convention

The Second Publication of Proposed Legislation for the 2003 Convention in Anaheim, California, includes a total of 52 proposals -- 37 for Division II and 15 for Division III.

The list of legislation is being provided online this year rather than in printed form. The proposals are located at NCAA Online (www.ncaa.org).

From now until November 1, the Divisions II and III Presidents Councils can submit amendments to a proposal for the 2003 Convention. Also in Divisions II and III, amendments can be submitted by eight active member institutions.
