The Division I Football Study Oversight Committee has recommended that the Division I Board of Directors endorse legislation to clarify and strengthen Division I-A conference criteria.
Under the proposal, leagues could be classified as Division I-A if they have at least eight members that meet all Division I-A standards. To be counted as one of the eight members, an institution would have to participate in a conference schedule in at least six men's and eight women's conference-sponsored sports (men's basketball and football and three women's team sports would have to be included). Conference-sponsored sports also would have to provide regular-season and conference championship opportunities, consistent with minimum standards identified by NCAA sports committees for automatic qualification.

The NCAA has mailed a questionnaire to risk managers at member institutions to help with a feasibility study about accident insurance.
The Association is seeking to determine if economic value and benefit similar to that of the catastrophic insurance injury program can be provided through a single policy that provides basic accident coverage for student-athletes up to the deductible level of the catastrophic program.
"This coverage could apply only to those activities currently covered by the catastrophic injury insurance program or could potentially be expanded to include 24-hour accident coverage," NCAA President Cedric W. Dempsey wrote in a cover memorandum. "We contemplate this program as one that institutions could elect to participate in, with the premiums continuing to be paid by the institution, as they are now. However, we anticipate that a program of this sort could potentially cut costs for participating institutions by 10 to 20 percent."
The survey, which will be confidential and used only to determine if such a program is feasible, is to be returned to American Specialty Insurance by March 1.
