Indiana President Brand selected as NCAA chief executive officer

Myles Brand, president of Indiana University, Bloomington, was named October 10 to replace Cedric W. Dempsey as NCAA president.

NCAA Executive Committee Chair Bob Lawless, president of the University of Tulsa, said Brand was one of the top college presidents in the nation and that he is "a leader both on his campus and nationally within higher education."

Brand's contract will be through 2007. He was the unanimous choice of the NCAA Executive Committee.

BYERS SCHOLARSHIP

Application forms for NCAA's top academic honor now online

Application forms for the NCAA Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship are now available on NCAA Online at http://www.ncaa.org/library/
membership/walter_byers/2002-03/byers_program.pdf. A memorandum regarding the availability of the application folders was mailed to each institution's president, athletics director, senior woman administrator and faculty athletics representative October 7.

Two Byers scholars -- one male and one female -- are selected each spring by the Association. The scholarships, the highest NCAA academic honor awarded, are worth $21,500 each. The awards were established in 1988 to recognize the contributions of the former NCAA executive director by encouraging academic excellence by student-athletes.

MINORITY ISSUES

Committee recommends institutional mascot reviews

The NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee (MOIC) is recommending that institutions that use American Indian mascots and imagery thoroughly examine whether they are offending any of their constituents.

A MOIC report that the committee realizes and supports member institutions' rights to determine what their mascot should be, as long as institutions ensure that the use is appropriate.

The MOIC is recommending that schools conduct a review "of the depiction of and behaviors associated with the use by their athletics teams, cheerleaders, band members, other auxiliary groups and fans." To make sure the review is meaningful, the MOIC is asking that legislation be adopted to require the self-analysis to be submitted as part of the athletics certification process for Division I institutions or the self-assessment process for Divisions II and III institutions. Division I institutions would have to conduct the review regardless of where they fall in the certification cycle.

 MINORITY ISSUES

Latest race demographic study shows little change

The NCAA's most recent research on race demographics in intercollegiate athletics departments shows minimal gains in the percentage of ethnic minorities in administrative positions.

Data from the 2001 Race Demographics of NCAA Member Institutions' Athletics Personnel show few significant changes since the first report compiled in 1995-96.

The percentage of Blacks in administrative positions at the Division I level (historically black colleges and universities excluded) increased from 6.2 percent in 1995-96 to 8.5 in 2001, but percentages in the top positions (athletics director, associate and assistant AD) actually fell.
