Perry announces plans to retire at Penn State

Ellen Perry, a member of the NCAA Division I Management Council since January 2000, announced plans to retire from Penn State, effective June 30. Perry has been associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at the school since 1989.

Perry joined the athletics department at Penn State in 1966 as a graduate assistant women's lacrosse coach and physical education teacher. In 1970, she became the school's first varsity women's swimming and diving coach after she established a club-level program in 1967. She maintained head coaching responsibilities through 1981, when she accepted duties as assistant to the athletics director. Perry, who also served as an assistant professor of exercise and sports science from 1966 through the mid-1980s, was promoted to senior woman administrator in 1989.

Perry earned a bachelor of science in education in 1963 at Tufts while competing in basketball and swimming. She earned a master's degree in education from Penn State in 1969.

West, who was promoted to vice-president for alumni development and assistant to the president, has been athletics director since June 1996. Marcum will retire from Massachusetts in June after nine years as athletics director ... Massachusetts selected Bill Strickland as interim athletics director ... Eastern Kentucky's Joseph C. Smith resigned as athletics director ... Paul Bubb, senior associate athletics director at Maine, was named as interim athletics director, effective June 30. Bubb will replace Suzanne Tyler, who resigned ... Lamar selected Billy Tubbs as athletics director. Tubbs, who most recently retired after eight seasons as head men's basketball coach at Texas Christian, formerly coached Lamar from 1976 to 1980 and formerly led Oklahoma to a 1988 national championship game appearance ... Tim Petermann accepted responsibilities as interim athletics director at Wisconsin-Eau Claire, effective July 1, to succeed Marilyn Skrivseth. Petermann has fulfilled various positions since joining the school in 1971, including assistant to the athletics director and sports information director ... Cal State Sacramento selected Terry Wanless as athletics director. Wanless, who spent from 1990 to 1999 as athletics director at North Dakota, succeeds Debby Colberg ... North Alabama named Joel Erdmann as athletics director ... Sean T. Frazier was awarded responsibilities as director of athletics and recreation at Clarkson, effective July 1. Frazier has been director of athletics and recreation at Manhattanville.

Baseball -- Bobby Randall resigned as head coach at Kansas ... Chris Harrison resigned as interim head coach at Michigan ... Reggie Tredaway, head coach at Texas-Pan American, announced plans to retire. Tredaway, who has guided the program for five years, was an assistant with the program for 23 years before accepting head coaching duties ... Bill Bethea resigned as head coach at Arkansas State, effective at the end of June ... Fresno State hired Mike Batesole as head coach to replace Bob Bennett, who retired after serving as head coach for 34 years. For the past seven seasons, Batesole has worked as head coach at Cal State Northridge ... Bobby Simmons was selected as head coach at St. Andrews. Simmons, who replaces Joe Critcher, has been an assistant with the program for four years.

Men's basketball -- Kent Thomas was selected as head coach at Lambuth ... Illinois-Chicago awarded head coach Jimmy Collins with a contract extension through the 2005-06 season. Collins has been head coach since March 1996 ... Saint Joseph's (Indiana) hired Linc Darner as head coach to succeed Ken Carrillo. For the past four years, Darner has served as an assistant at Ashland ... Andrew Miller was chosen as head coach at Lynchburg. Miller has worked as an assistant men's basketball coach, recruiting coordinator, assistant women's soccer coach and exercise and sport science instructor at Hiram for two seasons ... Dennis Wolff, head coach at Boston U., signed a seven-year contract extension ... Indiana's Mike Davis signed a six-year contract extension as head coach. Men's basketball assistants -- Lehigh hired Brett Reed and Nathan Jameson as assistant coaches. Reed has spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at High Point, and Jameson is a 2001 graduate of North Carolina-Greensboro, where he was a two-time academic all-American and captain of the men's basketball team ... Nebraska appointed Doug Novsek and Mike Broughton as assistant coaches and awarded Dave Campbell responsibilities as director of basketball operations ... Mitchell has been an assistant for three seasons and succeeds Dick Barry ... Albany (New York) named Craig McVey as head men's and women's coach. McVey has been with the school for the past five years and will continue as associate head track and field coach.

Field hockey -- Michelle Andre was chosen as head coach at Rochester. Andre, who replaces Colleen Doyle, most recently has been a graduate assistant field hockey coach, graduate assistant women's lacrosse coach and assistant to the athletics director at Rowan ... Katie Grabiec resigned as head field hockey and lacrosse coach at American International.

Football assistants -- Northern Illinois appointed Darrell Funk as tight ends coach ... Trinity (Connecticut) named Kilheme Cowan and David Jones as assistants. Cowan, who worked as an assistant defensive backfield coach at Sacred Heart during the 2002 spring season, will assist with the running backs. Jones, who spent last fall as assistant offensive line coach at Lafayette, will serve as defensive line coach and athletics department graduate assistant ... Paul McGonagle was selected as running backs coach at Bucknell ... Drake elevated Jamie Marshall to defensive coordinator. Marshall has been secondary coach ... Dewayne Alexander was hired as defensive line coach at Tennessee Tech. Alexander, who has been an assistant coach at the high-school level for the past year, succeeds Chris Jones ... Matt Gilliam was chosen as tight ends coach at Jacksonville ... Minnesota State-Mankato added Dave Paffenroth as offensive coordinator and academic coordinator, Joe Beschorner as quarterbacks coach and equipment coordinator, Brian Early as linebackers and strength and conditioning coach and Byron Slack as wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator. Men's and women's golf -- Saginaw Valley State named Andy Bethune as head coach ... Kelley Hester was hired as head women's coach at Arkansas. Most recently, Hester has guided the program at UNLV ... Northern Illinois' Jack Pheanis announced plans to retire as head men's coach and become director of special projects and golf coach emeritus at the school. Pheanis, who has been head golf coach for 37 seasons, also served as assistant football, assistant men's basketball and assistant men's swimming coach during his tenure ... Robert Kennedy announced plans to step down as head coach at Brown, but will continue to serve as an associate athletics director.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Mark Johnson was appointed as head women's coach at Minnesota. Johnson replaces interim head coach Trina Bourget ... Brian McCloskey was chosen as head women's coach at New Hampshire to replace Karen Kay. For the past four years, McCloskey has served as associate men's ice hockey coach at the school ... Wisconsin-Eau Claire appointed Jean-Francois Laforest as head men's coach. Most recently, Laforest, who succeeds Marlin Muylaert, has been director of hockey operations for the Port Huron (Michigan) Border Cats of the United Hockey League.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Frank Vitolo resigned as head men's coach at Pace to accept responsibilities as offensive coordinator with the New Jersey Pride of the Major Lacrosse League. Vitolo has led the program at Pace for three seasons.

Men's and women's rowing -- Saint Mary's (California) head women's coach Rich Wendling resigned after guiding the program for the past five years.

Men's soccer -- Plymouth State head coach Keith Byrnes resigned after two seasons to assume full-time head coaching duties at Frostburg State ... Chris Yeager was named as head coach at Lynchburg. For the past two seasons, Yeager has been head coach at Hiram ... Quinnipiac hired Sam Carrington as head coach. Carrington has worked as head coach at St. Francis (New York) for 13 seasons ... Dariusz Panol, an assistant coach at Utica for the past two seasons, was elevated to head coach. Panol succeeds Tim Nelson, who will continue as head lacrosse coach at the school.

Women's soccer -- Edgewood selected Felipe Teixeira as head women's coach. Teixeira formerly spent five years as head men's and women's coach at Wisconsin-Eau Claire ... Jim Brazeau was named as director of soccer and was awarded additional responsibilities as head women's coach at Pacific (Oregon). Brazeau, who succeeds Tim Copeland as head women's coach, has spent the past two seasons as head men's coach.

Women's soccer assistants -- Abby Gillard was named as an assistant coach at Drake ... Bucknell appointed Meghan Lynch as an assistant coach.

Softball -- Leslie Moore was named head coach at George Washington. The program is scheduled to begin competition in the spring of 2003. For the past two seasons, Moore has worked as an assistant at Lock Haven ... Eric Best was appointed as head men's and women's diving coach at Michigan State.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Bruce Marchionda resigned as head men's and women's coach at Clemson.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistant -- Colleen Murphy was appointed as an assistant coach at Penn State.

Men's and women's tennis -- Sean Burns resigned as head men's coach at Santa Clara ... Baylor's Dave Luedtke resigned as head women's coach.

Men's and women's track and field -- Perry Jenkins was elevated to head men's indoor and outdoor track and field coach at Buffalo (New York). Jenkins, who succeeds Dick Barry, has spent the past three years as an assistant with the program ... Tennessee named J.J. Clark as head women's track and field and cross country coach. Clark has been assistant head track and field coach and cross country coach at Florida.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Saint Anselm's Chris Dupuis resigned as head women's coach ... Katie Moskowitz was selected as interim head coach to replace Jody Paperno, who resigned. Moskowitz was a graduate assistant with the program last season ... Mississippi University for Women hired Chris Campbell as head women's coach. For the past three seasons, Campbell has been head coach at Louisiana-Lafayette ... Brigham Young's Elaine Michaelis resigned as head women's coach ... Andrea Leonard was elevated to associate head women's coach at New Hampshire ... Rita Adolphson was selected as head women's coach at North Central. ... New Paltz State hired Antonia Sweet as head women's coach. Sweet has been an assistant men's and women's coach at Vassar for four years.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Christy Attebery was added as first assistant coach at Wingate. Attebery is a 2002 graduate of Western Carolina, where she was a three-time all-Southern Conference honoree and is the school's all-time career leader in kills and digs ... Utah State named Cindy Willey as an assistant women's coach.

Wrestling -- Tom Shifflet was chosen as head coach at North Carolina-Greensboro ... Plymouth State chose Donald Perrin as head coach.

STAFF

Administrative -- Keith Spears was elevated to vice-president for institutional advancement at Marshall after working as vice-president for communications and assistant to the president since 1997. The school also announced that Sam Stanley, assistant vice-president for alumni relations since 1998, will retire, effective in the summer.

Equipment manager -- St. John's (New York) selected Derek Smith as director of equipment operations.

Sports information -- Mike Salerno was chosen as sports information director at New Paltz State. Salerno has fulfilled sports information duties at Connecticut College for the past five years.

Strength and conditioning -- Scott Brincks was awarded responsibilities as strength and conditioning coach at Chattanooga.

Strength and conditioning assistant -- Clemson appointed Tom Melton as assistant strength and conditioning coach.

CONFERENCES

The Big 12 Conference selected John Underwood as assistant commissioner for basketball. Underwood has been president of the Dallas-Fort Worth Regional Sports Commission since 2000 and director of sports marketing for the Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau since 1998 ... Melody Puller was chosen as assistant director of media relations at the Mid-Continent Conference. Puller has been a sports information assistant at Texas-A&M-Corpus Christi for nine months ... The Atlantic 10 Conference promoted Jeff Long to assistant commissioner for corporate sponsorships.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Joyce Collins was elevated to travel and insurance manager at the national office ... Jeff Scott resigned as an enforcement representative at the NCAA ... Sharon Tufano was promoted to committee coordinator at the national office. Tufano has been executive assistant for Division III ... Amy Folan was elevated to membership services representative II/coordinator at the NCAA ... Jason Fordham resigned as a technical specialist-desktop support at the national office ... Brian Miley was named as systems administrator at the national office. Miley has been a security analyst/infrastructure analyst at EDS ... Kendyl Baugh resigned as assistant director of the Division I Men's Basketball Championship at the national office to accept a position as manager of event marketing for the NFL's Atlanta Falcons ... Tammy Lee has been reclassified as assistant coordinator of the Division I Men's Basketball Championship.

NOTABLES

Erin Elbe was named as the Honda Award winner as the top woman collegiate athlete in lacrosse for 2002. The Georgetown senior, a tri-captain, helped the team go undefeated in Big East Conference play and capture the 2002 conference championship. Elbe also was named Big East Conference attack player of the year and earned Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association/U.S. Lacrosse national all-America first team recognition.

DEATHS

Paul Giel, former athletics director at Minnesota, died May 22. Giel, 69, spent 18 years as athletics director at Minnesota. A two-time all-America football and baseball selection, Giel finished second for the Heisman Trophy in 1953 and went on to pitch for four Major League Baseball clubs from 1954 to 1961.

Thomas F. Bates, an athletics administrator at Navy, died of cancer May 21. He was 64. Bates came to Navy in 1973 as sports information director, a position he held for 23 years, before assuming responsibilities as assistant athletics director for compliance in 1996. He also was sports information director at Gannon and Lafayette.

Grace Johnstone Osborne Rhonemus, a former student-athlete at North Dakota, died April 10. She was 96. Rhonemus competed in track, volleyball, basketball and rifle at the school from 1923 to 1925. The 1924 all-America selection served as director of physical education for women at North Dakota from 1944 to 1956 and was an associate professor of physical education from 1956 to 1975.

William Henry Likins, former president at Greensboro, died May 21. Likins served as president from 1984 to 1993.

Former Notre Dame football halfback Creighton Miller died of a heart attack at the age of 79. Miller competed at Notre Dame from 1941-43 and was fourth in the Heisman Trophy race in 1943. He is a 1976 College Football Hall of Fame inductee.

Former Notre Dame football player John J. Fallon died of a stroke May 25. He was 75. Fallon, who was a tackle at the school from 1944 to 1948, helped Notre Dame earn a national championship in 1946. Fallon, who had retired as an executive at Chrysler Corporation, also was an assistant football coach at Wayne State (Michigan) in 1949.
