Winona State has named Kyle Poock as head baseball coach. Poock succeeds Gary Grob, who retired after 35 years as head coach.
Poock has been an assistant with the program since 1996 and formerly was an assistant at the school from 1984 to 1990. He also has been an assistant women's basketball coach and a health and human performance instructor at the school since the 1997-98 academic year. Poock coached at the high-school level in addition to completing an assistant coaching stint at Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
The 1983 Winona State graduate played baseball and basketball for four years. Poock also earned a master's degree from the school in 1997.

Beverly Daniel Tatum was named as president at Spelman, effective in August. Tatum has been acting president and dean of the college at Mount Holyoke ... Richard W. Ferrin was named as president at Salem International. Ferrin formerly was president at Maryville (Tennessee) ... South Carolina selected Andrew Sorensen as president, effective in July. Sorensen has been president at Alabama.

Hamline chose Dan O'Brien as athletics director ... Pete Boone was hired as athletics director at Mississippi. Boone, who replaces John Shafer, formerly was athletics director at the school from 1995 to 1998 ... WPI chose Dana Harmon as director of physical education, recreation and athletics ... Guilford named Marion Kirby as athletics director to succeed Mike Ketchum, who will continue as head football coach. Kirby most recently retired in April after having served as head football coach at Greensboro since 1996. ... Michael Elbe resigned as athletics director and head men's basketball coach at Dubuque ... Don Amiot, athletics director at Minnesota State-Mankato, announced plans to retire, effective June 30. Before assuming duties as athletics director in 1998, Amiot worked as director of men's athletics at the school for 10 years ... Concordia-St. Paul appointed David Herbster as interim athletics director. Herbster has been associate athletics director at the school ... Suzanne Tyler resigned as athletics director at Maine, effective June 30. Tyler, who has led the athletics department for seven years, will become a senior advisor to the provost and vice-president for academic affairs at the school next year and will join the faculty in the fall of 2003.

Baseball -- Central (Iowa) hired Scott Renning as head coach, succeeding John Edwards. Edwards is retiring after 25 years at the end of the season, but he will focus on responsibilities as assistant to the athletics director. For the last five years, Renning has served as head baseball coach and science teacher at Little Falls (Minnesota) High School ... Mike McGuire was named as head coach at Lander to replace Rusty Stroupe, who became head coach at Gardner-Webb. McGuire has been an assistant coach at Winthrop for six years ... Pittsburgh-Greensburg's Mike Johnson resigned as head coach. Johnson has guided the program since 1999. The school named Mark Katarski as interim head coach.
Men's basketball -- Dominican awarded head coaching responsibilities to Mark White. White formerly was head coach of the program from 1996 to 2000 ... Salve Regina's Mike Plansky resigned as head coach and the school named Sean Foster as his successor. Foster has spent the past three years as an assistant with the program ... Carroll added David Schultz as head coach. In the past nine seasons as head boys' basketball coach at Waukesha West (Wisconsin), Schultz has compiled a record of 153-55 ... Women's basketball assistants -- Dave Manley was selected as an assistant coach at Lamar. For the past two seasons, Manley has worked as an assistant men's basketball coach at the school ... Melissa Parker was awarded assistant coaching responsibilities at Loyola (Illinois). Parker has been a graduate assistant coach at Florida State for two years ... Wofford hired Debra Pope as an assistant coach. Most recently, Pope has worked as head basketball and volleyball coach at Olympic (North Carolina) High School ... Brenda Milano was awarded duties as an assistant coach at Hofstra ... Long Island chose Jennifer Greenwell as an assistant coach ... Dick Barry, head men's and women's cross country and track and field coach at Buffalo, announced his retirement.
Field hockey -- Michelle Burt, head field hockey and lacrosse coach at Virginia Wesleyan, resigned after five years ... WPI hired Johanna DiCarlo as head field hockey and softball coach. DiCarlo has spent the past two years as an assistant athletics director and head field hockey and head softball coach at Regis (Massachusetts) ... Swarthmore added Kelly Wilcox as head coach to take over for Karen Borbee, who resigned as head field hockey coach, but who will continue as head women's lacrosse coach. Wilcox has been an assistant field hockey and women's lacrosse coach at the school since 1999.
Football -- California (Pennsylvania) chose John Luckhardt as head coach ... G.A. Mangus accepted duties as head coach at Delaware Valley ... Rich Mosca was promoted to head coach at Fairleigh Dickinson-Madison. For the past two seasons, Mosca has worked as the program's offensive coordinator.
Football assistants -- B.J. Anderson was added as offensive line coach at Tarleton State. Anderson, who has been a graduate assistant coach at Texas A&M for three seasons, replaces Dick Winder ... Eastern Michigan chose Kevin Wolthausen as an assistant coach.
Men's and women's golf -- Montana State-Billings hired Dave Doherty as head men's and women's coach. The program is scheduled to begin competition in the fall of 2002. Doherty will continue as PGA Head Golf Pro at Pryor Creek Golf Club in Huntley, Montana ... Tom Higgins announced plans to retire as head men's coach at Loyola Marymount.
Men's and women's gymnastics -- Florida named Rhonda Faehn as head coach ... Tom Miller resigned as head women's coach at Brown.
Men's and women's ice hockey -- Joe Mallen resigned as head men's coach at Massachusetts-Boston.
Men's and women's ice hockey assistant -- Dartmouth appointed Kristina Guarino as an assistant women's coach.
Men's and women's lacrosse -- Ohio's Anne Moelk resigned as head women's coach ... Melissa Ackerman was chosen as head coach at Sweet Briar. Ackerman has spent the past seven years as head coach at Randolph-Macon.
Men's soccer -- Paul R. Shaw was appointed as head coach at Sweet Briar ... Chris Yeager was selected as head coach at Lynchburg. For the past two seasons, Yeager has worked as head coach at Hiram ... Matt Thompson was hired as head coach at Slippery Rock. Men's and women's volleyball -- Northern Colorado named Ron Alexander as head coach to replace Linda Delk. Alexander has been an assistant coach at North Carolina for the past two seasons ... Marquette hired Pati Rolf as head women's coach. Rolf, who has compiled a 310-169 record in 14 years as head coach at Minnesota-Duluth, takes over for Laura Farina ... Charlie Brande, head men's and women's coach at UC Irvine, relinquished head men's coaching responsibilities, but retained duties as head women's coach. Brande has led the men's squad for six seasons and guided the women's team for two years ... Jennifer Strauss was hired as head women's coach at Virginia Wesleyan. The program is scheduled to begin competition in 2002. Strauss captained the Fairfield volleyball team for four years and established school records for digs and aces before graduating in 2000 ... Kentucky Wesleyan's Heather Oxley resigned after one season as head coach ... Connie Mettille was hired as head coach at Winona State to succeed Amy Fisher. Mettille spent the 1999 and 2000 seasons as head coach at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology ... Saint Joseph's (Indiana) named Ken Murczek as head women's coach ... Eckerd named Andrew Joseph as head women's coach. Joseph has been head coach at Agnes Scott.
Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Mark Mann was selected as an assistant coach at Nicholls State ... Dartmouth chose Kristen Shockley as an assistant women's coach ... Auburn named Steve Aird as an assistant women's coach ... Tim O'Brien was appointed as an assistant women's coach at Loyola (Illinois) ... Wrestling -- Slippery Rock hired Jim Harshaw as head coach to replace Chris Elliott, who was interim head coach last season. Harshaw has been an assistant at Virginia for two seasons.
STAFF
Athletic trainer -- John Belich announced plans to retire as athletic trainer at Missouri-Rolla, effective at the end of the academic year. Belich has served as an athletic trainer at the school for 26 years.
Development assistant -- Seton Hall named Michael Oakes as associate director of the Pirate Blue Athletic Fund. For the past two years, Oakes has worked as associate director of alumni relations at the school.
Marketing/promotions -- North Carolina's Steffi Backer resigned as coordinator of marketing and promotions. Backer has been a member of the staff since August.
Strength and conditioning -- Baylor selected John Williams Jr. as director of strength and conditioning.
ASSOCIATIONS
Bob Jackson was chosen as director of business development for Home Town Sports Promotions. Jackson has been with the organization since April 2000. Home Town Sports Promotions handles event marketing, ticket sales and sponsorships for college and professional sports organizations.
Brian Dougherty was selected as manager, athlete services with the United States Olympic Committee. Dougherty formerly served as a games publication and technology coordinator for the USOC from 1997 to 2000.
AGREEMENTS
The Mid-American Conference and the Big Ten Conference announced a four-year agreement to send representatives to the Motor City Bowl. The MAC is slated to send its No. 1 or No. 2 team to compete against the seventh bowl-eligible team from the Big Ten. The 2002 Motor City Bowl is scheduled to be played December 26 and will be televised by ESPN.
NATIONAL OFFICE
Tammy Smith was reclassified as membership database administrator at the national office.
The national office hired Craig Pennington as network engineer. Pennington has been a senior network engineer at Golden Rule Insurance.
CLARIFICATIONS
The following clarification should be noted regarding initial-eligibility waiver information reported in a March 4 NCAA News article. The "automatic" English waiver, which was begun in 1998-99, can occur when a prospect lacks one unit of English but has a high English score on the SAT or ACT (70th percentile) and (not or) a 3.300 grade-point average.
REPRIMANDS
The NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee has issued a public reprimand to Duke University student-athlete Matt Christensen for verbally assaulting and making physical contact with a member of the officiating crew after Duke's regional semifinal loss to Indiana University, Bloomington, in the 2002 championship. The committee also directed Christensen to write a letter of apology to the official, which he has done. In addition, the committee will withhold from Duke the per diem for Christensen's participation in the regional semifinal. Lee Fowler, committee chair and director of athletics at North Carolina State University, said that had Christensen not exhausted his intercollegiate athletics eligibility at the end of the 2002 season, the committee would have suspended him from at least the next NCAA tournament game in which Duke participated.
Former head football coach Dan Devine died May 9. Devine, 77, served tenures as head coach at Notre Dame, Missouri and Arizona State. In 1977, Devine guided Notre Dame to a national championship. He also spent four seasons as head coach with the NFL's Green Bay Packers and served as athletics director at Missouri from 1992 to 1994.
Grand Valley State basketball player Derek Smith collasped and died recently after participating in a pickup game. He was 19. Smith was a redshirt freshman with the basketball squad.
Former Louisville athletics administrator Jack Tennant died May 6. He was 73. Tennant worked in various capacities with the school's athletics department for 19 years in addition to serving as football and basketball play-by-play announcer.
John Harper Dawson, former president at Adrian, died April 20. He was 87.
Wilson Matthews, former coach and athletics administrator at Arkansas, died May 12. He was 80. Matthews joined Arkansas as a football defensive ends and linebackers coach in 1958. In 1973, Matthews accepted assistant athletics director duties and eventually assumed associate athletics director responsibilities before being named associate athletics director emeritus in 1992. Matthews also served as head coach at the high-school level, guiding Little Rock Central (Arkansas) High School to 10 state championships and a 111-14-3 record in 11 years.
Dewayne Bonner, a former basketball student-athlete at Tulsa, died of liver cancer May 14. He was 28. Bonner competed on the school's 1996 Missouri Valley Conference championship squad.
