Rhode Island has selected Stacey Bean as head field hockey coach. Bean replaces Rebecca Provost Campbell, who resigned after seven years.
For the past two years, Bean has been an assistant coach at Boston College. Before joining the program there, she guided squads at the University of New Brunswick in Canada to five straight Atlantic University Athletic Association championships and a 65-15-7 record from 1995 to 1999. Bean was a four-time conference coach of the year selection at New Brunswick.
Bean earned a bachelor's degree in physical and health education at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada in 1993. As a field hockey student-athlete at the school from 1989 to 1993, she twice served as team captain and was a player-assistant coach in 1992. She also has attended graduate school at New Brunswick.

William Farrell was elevated to president at Rivier after most recently filling the position on an interim basis ... Catawba named Robert E. Knott as president. Knott has been chancellor at Mars Hill ... Nora Kizer Bell was selected as president at Hollins, effective in July. Bell has been president at Wesleyan College in Georgia ... New Mexico President William C. Gordon resigned to become provost at Wake Forest, effective September 1 ... William E. Kirwan, president at Ohio State, was named as chancellor of the University System of Maryland, effective August 1 ... Bluefield State's Robert E. Moore resigned as president, effective June 30. Moore will continue with the school as professor of health, physical education, kinesiology and exercise physiology ... Kent John Chabotar was selected as president at Guilford, effective July 1. Chabotar, who replaces Don McNemar, has been vice-president for finance and administration and treasurer at Bowdoin since 1991 ... Western State named Jay Helman as president. Helman has been vice-president for academic affairs at the school ... John F. Noonan resigned as president at Bloomfield, effective June 2003.
DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS
W. Dean Billick resigned as athletics director at Lamar to become deputy director of athletics at Cincinnati ... Northwest Nazarene chose Rich Sanders as athletics director to succeed Scott Armstrong, who resigned to focus full time on serving as professor and chairperson of the kinesiology department. Sanders, who has been with the school since 1991, will relinquish responsibilities as head men's basketball coach ... John Shafer resigned after working as athletics director at Mississippi since 1998 ... Chattanooga selected Steve Sloan, to succeed Oval Jaynes as athletics director. Sloan has been athletics director at Central Florida ... Evansville hired Bill McGillis as athletics director. For the past four years, McGillis has worked as an associate athletics director at New Mexico ... Chico State's Don Batie announced plans to retire as athletics director, effective July 1. In addition to fulfilling athletics director duties for the past seven years, Batie also guided the men's soccer program to a 326-153-45 record in 28 seasons from 1967 to 1995. Anita Barker, an associate athletics director at the school, was selected to serve a two-year term as interim athletics director.
SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR
Rollins appointed Pennie Parker as senior woman administrator and assistant athletics director. Parker has been director of compliance services at Florida State.

Jack Parker, head men's ice hockey coach and assistant athletics director at Boston U., was named as executive director of athletics at the school. Parker has guided the men's ice hockey program since 1973 and will retain head coaching responsibilities ... Connecticut selected Jackie Campbell as associate athletics director for student services. Since 1997, Campbell has worked as assistant commissioner for compliance at the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Men's basketball -- Jeff Lebo was hired as head coach at Chattanooga to succeed Henry Dickerson. In the past four seasons, Lebo has guided Tennessee Tech to a 75-43 mark ... Central Missouri State named Kim Anderson as head coach to succeed Don Doucette, who resigned after six seasons. Anderson has served as an assistant commissioner with the Big 12 Conference for the past two years ... Jim Les was awarded duties as head coach at Bradley. Les, who takes over for Jim Molinari, was an assistant coach for player development with the WNBA's Sacramento Monarchs from 1999 to 2001 ... Bethune-Cookman elevated Clifford Reed Jr. to head coach to replace Horace Broadnax. Reed, an assistant with the program since 1997, most recently has been interim head coach ... Mike Anderson was chosen as head coach at Alabama-Birmingham. Pastner has been an undergraduate assistant since 2000 ... Gallagher Driscoll was named as an assistant at Albany (New York). Driscoll has worked as an assistant at Loyola (Maryland) for the past two years ... Arkansas added Oronde Taliaferro and Rob Flaska as assistants. Taliaferro spent last season as an assistant at Kent State, and Flaska has fulfilled assistant coaching duties at Texas Christian for the past four years ... Women's basketball -- San Diego State selected Jim Tomey as head coach to replace Barb Smith. For the past three years, Tomey has been an assistant men's basketball coach at San Diego State ... Oklahoma State hired Julie Goodenough as head coach ... Pat McGunnigle was promoted to head coach at Southampton after serving as an assistant coach ... Marnie Dacko was appointed as head coach at Massachusetts. Dacko, who succeeds Joanie O'Brien, closes a seven-season tenure at Cornell ... Louisiana-Lafayette hired J. Kelley Hall as head coach. Hall, who replaces Gay Nix, has been associate head coach at Louisville ... Iowa State extended the contract of head coach Bill Fennelly through the 2008-09 season. In seven seasons as head coach, Fennelly has guided the program to a 162-59 mark ... Stacy Johnson was selected as head coach at Fresno State to succeed Britt King. For the past two seasons, Johnson has been an assistant at Louisiana Tech ... Jim Foster was hired as head coach at Ohio State, replacing Beth Burns. As head coach at Vanderbilt for the past 11 years, Foster has led the program to a 256-99 record and 10 NCAA tournament appearances ... Jodie Runner was promoted to head coach at Shepherd to succeed Betsy Blose, who resigned to become head coach at North Carolina-Asheville. Runner has been the top assistant coach at Shepherd since the 1997-98 season ... Purdue's Kristy Curry signed a six-year contract extension. Women's basketball assistants -- Florida chose Matthew Mitchell, Michael Peck and Charlene Thomas-Swinson as assistants ... Adrian Wiggins accepted assistant coaching responsibilities at Fresno State after serving as head coach at Cameron for two seasons ... Concordia-Moorhead named Bob Kohler as an assistant coach ... Jennifer Grandstaff and Kelly Chastain were selected as assistants at Middle Tennessee.
Football -- Greg Critchett was awarded a two-year contract as head coach at New Mexico Highlands. Critchett has been with the program for nine years and spent last season as interim head coach.
Football assistants -- New Mexico Highlands named John Fassel as quarterbacks and receivers coach ... Rick Ulrich accepted duties as offensive coordinator at Trinity (Connecticut). Ulrich, who succeeds Jeff Behrman, was offensive coordinator at Georgetown last season ... Bucknell added John Allen as wide receivers coach and Eric Lewis as defensive backs coach ... Robert James was chosen as defensive coordinator and William Iannone was chosen as offensive coordinator at New Haven ... Akron hired Jim Meyer as defensive ends coach and Dick Flynn as linebackers coach. Meyer formerly was an assistant at the school for the 1995 and 1996 seasons before serving as athletics director and head football coach at Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary's (Ohio) High School. Flynn formerly was head coach at Central Michigan from 1994 to 1999 and succeeds Luke Fickell ... Fordham promoted Joe Tricario to assistant head coach and co-defensive coordinator, John Berry to co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach and Dominick DeMatteo to special teams coordinator, recruiting coordinator and running backs coach. Tricario has served as special teams coordinator with the program for three seasons. Berry has been with the school for two years and worked as defensive cornerbacks coach last fall. DeMatteo, who begins his fourth season, was running backs coach. Fordham hired Michael Elko as linebackers coach, Sean Padden as defensive line coach and Chris Menick as assistant offensive line coach. Last fall, Elko was defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Merchant Marine. Padden was assistant linebackers coach at Columbia. Menick, a football first-team all-Ivy League selection for Harvard in 1997 and 1999, was a stockbroker with Salomon Smith Barney ... Ron Dickerson Jr. assumed duties as an assistant coach at Southwest Missouri State ... Rochester appointed Daniel Fichter as an assistant coach ... Kentucky elevated Gerald Carr to assistant head coach. Carr has been with the school since February and most recently worked as running backs coach ... Curtis Luper was named as running backs coach at New Mexico. For the past three seasons, Luper has worked as secodary coach at Texas A&M-Commerce.
Men's and women's golf -- Peter Ramsey accepted responsibilities as head men's coach at Lynchburg. Ramsey has been a project manager in charge of outside sales and purchasing with Taylor Ramsey Lumber Company for four years.
Men's and women's ice hockey -- New Hampshire will not extend a new contract to Karen Kay, head women's coach ... Maine named Tim Whitehead as head men's coach to succeed the late Shawn Walsh. Whitehead guided the program to an appearance in the 2002 national championship game.
Men's soccer -- Stefan Mangeac was chosen as head coach at Northwest Nazarene ... Justin Terranova was selected as head coach at Methodist. Terranova, who replaces Adrian Blewitt, has been an assistant at Old Dominion for four years.
Women's soccer -- Jose Monroy Jr. was appointed as head coach at Bloomfield ... Albright named Thomas Greenawalt as head coach. Greenawalt spent two seasons as an assistant men's coach at Washington (Maryland) and one year as an assistant women's coach at Haverford.
Women's soccer assistant -- Colorado College added Kate Cortis as an assistant. Cortis spent one season each at Chicago and Missouri working as an assistant coach.
Softball assistant -- Vanessa Campos was chosen as an assistant coach at Roger Williams. Campos presently serves as an police officer with the Portsmouth (Rhode Island) Police Deparment.
Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Scott Cummins resigned as head men's and women's swimming coach at Butler.
Men's and women's tennis -- Hawaii-Hilo released head coach Laron K. Kortgaard.
Men's and women's track and field -- Myrtle Ferguson resigned as head women's coach at Tennessee. Ferguson has been head coach since 1998. The school named assistants Scott Bennett and Rodney Rothoff as interim co-head coaches.
Men's and women's track and field assistant -- Erica Witter was named as an interim assistant coach in charge of the sprinters at Tennessee.
Men's and women's volleyball -- Campbell selected Gwen Adams as head women's coach to replace Perri Hankins, who became head coach at Virginia Commonwealth. For the past two years, Adams has worked as an assistant at North Texas ... Wayne State (Michigan) added Limin Jin as head coach. Jin has been head coach at California (Pennsylvania) for four seasons ... Cal State Fullerton's Mary Ellen Murchison announced plans to retire as head women's coach. Murchison has led the program for 10 years. The school chose Carolyn Zimmerman, an assistant for seven seasons, as interim head coach.
Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Phil Jackson and Justin Gilbert were chosen as assistant coaches at Texas-San Antonio ... Rhode Island named Chelsea Snyder and Greg Goral as assistants. Snyder has been an assistant at Providence, and Goral has spent the past two years as an assistant at Springfield.
Wrestling -- James Madison's Jeff Bowyer resigned as head coach.
STAFF
Academic services assistant -- Christine Scheets accepted responsibilities as a learning specialist at Miami (Florida).
Communications assistant -- Lauren Price was appointed as assistant athletics communications director in charge of women's basketball and softball at Ohio State.
Development -- Joseph Del Rossi was elevated to executive director of the Pirate Blue Athletic Fund at Seton Hall to replace Paul Huegel, who resigned to assume duties as president and chief executive officer of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of New Jersey. For the past three years, Del Rossi has been associate director of the athletics fund.
Marketing/promotions -- Penn State promoted Martin Salamone to director of athletics partnerships and promotions. Since 1997, Salamone has worked as assistant sports marketing and promotions director.
NATIONAL OFFICE
Leah Nilsson was promoted to membership services representative at the NCAA. Nilsson has been an intern at the national office.
Bridget Belgiovine was reclassified to associate chief of staff/executive committee liaison at the national office.
Crystal Reimer was named as manager of special events at the national office. Reimer has worked as the NCAA's travel and insurance manager.
AGREEMENTS
Conference USA signed a four-year agreement with the New Orleans Bowl. A Conference USA team will replace the Mountain West Conference representative.
AT&T Corporation will not renew its contract as presenting sponsor of the 2003 Rose Bowl game.
Sue Bird
, a senior basketball player at Connecticut, was named as the Honda Award winner as the top woman collegiate athlete in her sport for 2001-02. Bird, the Big East Conference player of the year and a selection on the Final Four all-tournament team, helped Connecticut capture the 2002 national championship with a 39-0 record.Alfred C. Emery
, president emeritus at Utah, died March 17. He was 83. Emery also was a professor emeritus of law at the school.Former Mississippi State head tennis coach Ranville Tom Sawyer died March 27. Sawyer, 91, also was a political science professor.
Leigh Gerdine, former president at Webster, died March 1. Gerdine was 84.
Thomas W. Rendall, former ice hockey player at Michigan, died April 7 at the age of 68. Rendall was a three-time all-America selection and helped Michigan make appearances at the 1954, 1955 and 1956 national championships.
Former Temple football running back Theodore "Tex" Robinson died April 3. He was 69. Robinson led the school in rushing and scoring during the 1952 and 1954 seasons and was selected as Temple's most valuable player in those seasons. He went on to play seven seasons in the Canadian Football League.
Cedric Barovero, a basketball student-athlete at Anderson (South Carolina), died April 4 after participating in a pick-up basketball game. Barovero was a freshman who made appearances in six varsity games during the 2001-02 season and played in 10 junior varsity games.
John Borton, former quarterback at Ohio State, died April 8 at the age of 69. He was a freshman linebacker in 1951 and then moved to quarterback for two seasons. Borton, who was co-captain of the 1954 team that captured the Rose Bowl championship, went on to play professionally with the Cleveland Browns in 1957-58.
Former Lafayette head track and field coach Charles Lancon died recently. He was 67. Lancon, who assumed head coaching duties at Lafayette in 1989, captured 17 Sun Belt Conference championships and was selected as conference coach of the year 14 times.
