Arkansas hires Heath as head hoops coach

Arkansas hired Stan Heath as head men's basketball coach. Heath succeeds Nolan Richardson.

In one season as head coach at Kent State, Heath led the school to a 30-6 mark, an appearance in the 2002 South Regional final of the Division I Men's Basketball Championship and the program's first regular-season Mid-American Conference title. Heath, who established a conference record for wins by a first-year coach, was named the 2002 conference coach of the year.

Heath previously served as an assistant coach at Michigan State for five years. He also has been an assistant at Hillsdale, Albion, Wayne State (Michigan) and Bowling Green.

Heath was a three-year letter-winner at Eastern Michigan, where he earned a bachelor's degree in social science in 1988 and a master's degree in sports administration at Wayne State (Michigan) in 1993.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Jack Lengyel was chosen as acting athletics director at Temple to replace Dave O'Brien. Lengyel retired as athletics director at Navy last year ... Lynn's Richard Young announced plans to retire as athletics director, effective this summer. Young formerly has been athletics director at Bowling Green, Oklahoma State, Washington State and Florida International ... Cliff Garrison stepped down as athletics director at Hendrix, but will continue as head men's basketball coach and will serve as senior athletics administrator for development. The school selected Danny Powell as athletics director. Powell has been director of development at Hendrix.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR

Mary Ann Schlientz was hired as senior woman administrator and head volleyball coach. Schlientz has been head volleyball coach at Conway (Arkansas) High School and formerly was interim director of women's athletics and head volleyball coach at Central Arkansas.

Jill Axel accepted responsibilities as assistant athletics director for external relations at Drexel ... Jay Newton was named as an assistant athletics director at Southern Indiana.

COACHES

Baseball -- Chuck Anderson announced his retirement after 20 seasons as head coach at Florida Southern. Anderson, who captured national championships in 1985, 1988 and 1995, will remain at the school as associate athletics director for special projects and baseball/sports marketing consultant. The school elevated Pete Meyer to interim head coach. Meyer has been an assistant for four seasons.

Men's basketball -- Ron Carr resigned as head coach at Lynchburg, effective at the end of the spring semester. Carr coached there for two seasons ... Michigan Tech signed head coach Kevin Luke to a contract extension ... Sul Ross State chose Doug Davalos as head coach. Davalos, who replaces Roger Grant, has been an assistant at Eastern New Mexico since 2000 ... Texas Christian hired Neil Dougherty as head coach to succeed Billy Tubbs. Dougherty has spent the past seven years as an assistant coach at Kansas ... Army selected Jim Crews as head coach to succeed Pat Harris. Since 1985, Crews has been head coach at Evansville ... Boise State appointed Greg Graham as head coach. Graham, who has been an assistant coach at Oregon, succeeds Rod Jensen ... Montana released Don Holst as head coach. Holst guided the Grizzlies for four years ... John Pelphrey, an assistant coach at Florida for the past six years, was hired as head coach at South Alabama. Pelphrey succeeds Bob Weltlich ... Ray Lopes was hired as head coach at Fresno State to succeed Jerry Tarkanian, who retired. For the past eight years, Lopes has worked as an assistant at Oklahoma ... Southwest State elevated Greg Stemen to head coach. Stemen, who also is head women's golf coach at the school, was an assistant men's basketball coach with the program for two seasons before serving as interim head coach last season ... Southern Illinois-Edwardsville awarded head coaching duties to Marty Simmons. Simmons, who replaces the retired Jack Margenthaler, has been an assistant coach at Evansville since 1997 ... Jim Christian was promoted to head coach at Kent State to replace Stan Heath. Christian spent one year as an assistant at Kent and formerly has been an assistant at Western Kentucky, St. Francis (Pennsylvania), Miami (Ohio) and Pittsburgh ... Long Beach State named Larry Reynolds as head coach to replace Wayne Morgan. Reynolds has been head coach at Cal State San Bernardino for five seasons ... New Mexico appointed Ritchie McKay as head coach. McKay, who succeeds Fran Fraschilla, has been head coach at Oregon State for two seasons ... Robert A. Ghiloni was hired as head coach at Denison. For the past 15 seasons, Ghiloni, who replaces Matt Dean, has worked as head boys' basketball coach at Bishop Ready (Ohio) High School ... Lorenzo Romar was named as head coach at Washington. Romar, who has led the program at Saint Louis to a 51-44 record since 1999, succeeds Bob Bender ... Eddie Payne was selected as head coach at South Carolina-Spartanburg to replace Gary Nottingham. For the past two years, Payne has been head coach and assistant athletics director at Greensboro ... Brad Jones resigned as head coach at Lambuth. Jones has guided the program to two Mid-South Conference championships since becoming head coach in 1996.

Men's basketball assistants -- Florida chose Anthony Grant as associate coach and added Donnie Jones and Tom Ostrom as assistant coaches ... Ron Bradley was named as an assistant coach at James Madison. Bradley has been head coach at Radford for 11 years ... New Mexico added Scott Didrickson, Brad Soucie and Duane Broussard as assistants. Didrickson and Soucie have been assistants at Oregon State and Broussard has been an assistant at Bradley for nine seasons ... Jorge Fernandez was hired as an assistant coach at South Alabama. For the past seven years, Fernandez has served as an assistant at Central Florida.

Women's basketball -- B.J. Smith was hired as head coach at Southeast Missouri to replace Ed Arnzen. For the past three seasons, Smith has guided the women's program at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M ... Boise State hired Jen Warden as head coach. Warden, who has been an assistant coach at Colorado, replaces Trisha Stevens, who resigned after six seasons ... Susquehanna's Mark Hribar resigned as head coach ... Kevin Pederson was elevated to head coach at Anderson (South Carolina). Since January, Pederson has served as interim head coach ... Idaho State chose Jon Newlee as head coach. Newlee, who succeeds interim coach Lynn Kennedy, has been the top assistant at Hawaii for three seasons ... Samford selected Mike Morris as head coach ... Southeastern Louisiana chose Lori Davis Jones as head coach. Davis, who replaces Frank Schneider, has been head coach at Lambuth since 1993 ... Michael Murphy assumed responsibilities as head coach at Troy State, replacing Jerry Hester ... Jeri Porter resigned as head coach at North Alabama. The school announced Flora Willie as interim head coach ... Tammy Holder was hired as head coach at Cal State Northridge. Holder, who takes over for Frozena Jerro and interim cohead coaches Paula Nirschl-Montgomery and Ken Turner, formerly was a head coach in the now-defunct American Basketball League. Nirschl-Montgomery and Turner will continue as assistants with the program ... Jennifer Rizotti, head coach at Hartford, signed a five-year contract extension through the 2007 season. Rizotti, who competes with the WNBA's Cleveland Rockers, has led the program for three seasons ... Lamar added Leonard Drake as head coach. Drake has been an assistant men's basketball coach at the school for five seasons and replaces DeAnn Craft ... Carolyn Peck accepted head coaching duties at Florida to succeed Carol Ross, who resigned after compiling a 247-121 mark in 12 seasons. Peck, formerly head women's coach at Purdue, has spent three seasons as head coach of the WNBA's Orlando Miracle ... Richmond appointed Joanne Boyle as head coach. For the past nine seasons, Boyle, who succeeds Bob Foley, has worked as an assistant at Duke ... Brenda Oldfield was hired as head coach at Maryland to succeed the retired Chris Weller. Oldfield served as head coach at Minnesota last season.

Women's basketball assistant -- Nebraska named Jim Seward as an assistant coach. Seward, who succeeds Jeff Walz, formerly was head men's coach at Central Oklahoma for 15 years.

Football -- Savannah State chose Mike Wallace as interim head coach ... Dave Patenaude assumed responsibilities as head coach at New Haven. For the past four seasons, Patenaude has been an assistant at Columbia, including most recently serving as offensive coordinator ... Rowan promoted John Accorsi to head coach. Accorsi joined the program as a graduate assistant in 1993 and most recently has spent the past two years as defensive coordinator ... Marion Kirby resigned as head coach at Greensboro. Kirby led the school to a 16-32 record in five seasons.

Football assistants -- Valdosta State added Kevin Shirley as defensive coordinator and secondary coach, and Ashley Anders as linebackers coach ... Joe Tumpkin was named as linebackers coach at Sam Houston State ... California (Pennsylvania) hired Dale Ploessl as offensive coordinator, strength coordinator and quarterbacks/wide receivers coach and chose Tony Dews as offensive line coach. Ploessl has been offensive line and tight ends coach at Iowa State, and Dews has been assistant offensive line coach at West Virginia ... Delaware appointed Kirk Ciarrocca as offensive coordinator, Dave Cohen as defensive coordinator, Bryan Bossard as passing game coordinator and Kyle Flood as offensive line coach. The school also added Craig Cummings as part-time defensive line assistant coach and Rick Brown as part-time special teams coordinator and tight ends coach. Ciarrocca, who replaces Ted Kempski, has been wide receivers coach at Pennsylvania, and Cohen, who succeeds Bob Sabol, has been associate head coach at Fordham for the past two seasons. Bossard has been defensive backs coach at Wyoming for the past two seasons, and Flood, who replaces Gregg Perry, has been offensive line coach at Hofstra for five seasons. Cummings was linebackers coach at Merchant Marine and Brown was offensive coordinator, special teams coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Holy Cross (New Jersey) High School. The school retained Marshall Hall as defensive line coach, Paul Williams as defensive secondary coach and Derek Barlow as graduate assistant coach ... Bowling Green selected Tim Beckman as assistant head coach-defense, Tommy Thigpen as special teams coordinator and Billy Gonzalez as co-recruiting coordinator ... Tommy Elrod was chosen as offensive line coach at Wofford ... Ohio added Mike Kolakowski as defensive backs coach ... Wayne State (Michigan) added Maurice "Maury" Waugh as defensive coordinator. Waugh has served as assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Western Carolina for the past four seasons.

Men's and women's golf -- Wentworth Institute appointed David Pierce as head coach to replace Kevin Kenney. Pierce has been an assistant baseball coach at East Bridgewater (Massachusetts) High School for two seasons, is the owner of Bellingham Golf and works as marketing director for The Hockey Magazine.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Rick Comley was hired as head men's coach at Michigan State. Comley, who succeeds Ron Mason, has been head coach at Northern Michigan for 26 seasons and also was athletics director at the school from 1987 to 2000 ... Roger Grillo, head men's coach at Brown, signed a multiyear contract extension.

Men's soccer -- Brian Sentowski was promoted to head coach at Montclair State. Sentowski, who has been an assistant with the program for two seasons, succeeds Rob Chesney ... Dallas added Colin D. Jones as head coach. Jones, who replaces Kenny Jones, has been an office assistant at Trinity (Texas) ... Matt Kern accepted responsibilities as head coach at Wofford.

Men's soccer assistants -- Centre appointed Mark Hudson as an assistant coach ... Wheaton (Massachusetts) named Matt O'Toole as an assistant.

Women's soccer -- Andy Cumbo was hired as head coach at Humboldt State ... Lehigh chose Manny Oudin as head coach ... Cory Ann Forkner Ellis was hired as head coach at Central (Iowa) to replace Amy Van Heukelem. Ellis has been an assistant women's soccer and assistant softball coach at DePauw for two seasons ... Wittenberg chose Norman Riker as head coach to succeed Fran Kulas, who resigned. Riker was interim head coach at Vassar during the 2001 season and has been assistant men's lacrosse and assistant women's soccer coach at the school since 1994.

Women's soccer assistants -- Ashley Hart was named as an assistant at Alabama-Birmingham ... Iowa State selected Jim Winslow as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Rob Harrington was selected as head men's and women's swimming and diving coach at Wheaton (Massachusetts). Harrington has been an assistant at Wooster ... Wabash's Gail Pebworth announced her retirement, effective June 30 after serving as head coach since 1984. Pebworth, who has an overall record of 775-112, also has been an assistant director of athletics since 1991 and was a member of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Rules Committee from 1995 to 1999.

Men's and women's tennis assistant -- Cynthia Tow was named as an assistant coach at Wellesley.

Men's and women's track and field -- James Williams was added as head men's and women's indoor track, track and field and cross country coach at West Chester.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Washburn selected Chris Herron as head women's coach ... Laura Farina was awarded responsibilities as head women's coach at Auburn ... Tarleton State hired Hadley Foster as head women's coach to succeed John Schmidt. For the past three years, Foster has been an assistant men's and women's coach at Findlay ... Western Illinois named Kym McKay as head coach. In three years, McKay, who replaces Michelle Gomez, guided the program at Joliet Junior College to a 98-40 mark and captured two North Central Community College Conference championships.

STAFF

Administrative -- Drexel chose Jack Childs as assistant to the athletics director.

Assistant athletic trainer -- Shannon Kendzior was appointed as an assistant athletic trainer at Drexel.

Facilities assistant -- Winthrop chose John Campbell as assistant director of Winthrop Coliseum.

Operations -- Todd O'Connor was added as operations coordinator at Drexel.

Sports information -- Leonard Haynes IV was hired as director of sports information at Morgan State.

Strength and conditioning assistant -- Georgia Southern selected Michael Bewley as assistant strength and conditioning coach.

CONFERENCES

The NCAA Division II Collegiate Commissioners Association elected Barry Blizzard as president and Robert J. Hiegert as vice-president and president-elect for a term of two academic years from 2002 to 2004. Blizzard has been commissioner of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for 15 years, and Heigert has been commissioner for the California Collegiate Athletic Association for five years.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Josh White was hired as a membership services representative at the national office. Most recently, White has worked as director of compliance at Nebraska-Omaha.

Paul Parker was hired as a membership services representative at the national office. Parker has been an assistant athletics director for compliance and marketing at Southwest Baptist.

ASSOCIATIONS

The International Olympic Committee hired Giselle Davies as director of communications. Davies has been with the Jordan Grand Prix Formula One team since 1997, most recently working as head of corporate communications.

The National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators named Hilda Maness as director of development.

NOTABLES

Natalie Coughlin, a swimming student-athlete at California, was named as the Honda Award winner as the top woman collegiate athlete in the sport of swimming and diving for 2001-02. The sophomore captured three individual NCAA championships and was named NCAA swimmer of the year for the second straight year.

Barbara Stevens, head women's basketball coach at Bentley, was named as the recipient of the 2002 Carol Eckman Award presentated by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Stevens, a former president of the WBCA, has led the Bentley program for 16 seasons and has an overall career record of 607-161.

CORRECTIONS

An article in the March 18 issue of The NCAA News referred to Marc Kidd of Host Communications as the company's president and CEO. Kidd is Host's president and COO. Jim Host remains as CEO.

DEATHS

Former Hendrix men's basketball coach Lee Morton Hutto died March 21 at the age of 85. Hutto was an assistant at Hendrix from 1946-56. After a stint as head coach at Henderson State, Hutto became head men's basketball coach at Hendrix in 1963. He also was athletics director, associate professor of physical education and head men's golf coach at the school.

Kelsi Merritt, a track and field student-athlete at Minnesota State Moorhead, died of encephalitis March 19. Merritt was 18.

Laura Culp, a volleyball student-athlete at Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis, died of cancer on March 26. She was 21. Culp, a junior elementary education major, was a member of the 2000 Mid-Continent Conference championship team and played every game during her freshman and sophomore seasons.

Former Lamar Athletics Director John Gray died recently at the age of 95. Gray served as athletics director, head football coach, teacher and dean of men in 1932 when South Park Junior College became Lamar. Gray, who selected the Cardinals as the school's mascot, completed two terms as president at the school.
