High Point has appointed Julie Streng as head women's golf coach. The program is scheduled to begin competition in the fall of 2003.
Streng was a four-year member of the Stanford women's golf squad after walking on in 1992. She earned a slot on a Pacific-10 Conference all-star team that competed in tournaments in Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan and also participated in the Japan/USA Goodwill Team matches in 1995 in Japan. Streng, a three-time academic all-American, served as co-captain of the team as a senior.
Most recently, Streng has been a senior consultant with Deloitte Consulting. She earned a bachelor's degree in human biology at Stanford in 1996 and earned a master of business administration degree at Duke in 2000.

Gerald L. Bepko was named as interim president of the Indiana University system, effective January 1. Bepko has been chancellor at Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis ... St. Andrews Presbyterian selected John Deegan Jr. as president. Deegan has been vice-president for academic affairs, dean of the college and professor of political science at Westminster (Pennsylvania) ... Mesa State President Michael Gallagher announced plans to step down, effective December 31. Gallagher will continue with the school as a professor of business. Samuel Gingerich, vice-president for academic affairs at the school, was announced as interim president ... Donald R. Gerth announced plans to retire as president at Cal State Sacramento, effective in the summer of 2003 ... West Alabama chose Richard Holland as president. Holland most recently filled the position on an interim basis ... Weber State appointed F. Ann Millner as president. Millner was vice-president for university relations at the school.
DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
Miami (Ohio) named Brad Bates as athletics director to replace Joel Maturi. Bates has been at Vanderbilt since 1998, most recently serving as senior associate athletics director.

New York Institute of Technology selected James Turley as faculty athletics representative to succeed James Ramert, who stepped down.

John Robinson Jr. was announced as senior associate athletics director at Houston. Robinson has been an associate athletics director at Villanova for eight years.

Houston elevated Devin Crosby to assistant director for marketing and promotions and elevated Maria C. Peden as assistant athletics director for student-athlete services. Crosby has been director of marketing and promotions since 2001 and Peden has been academic counselor for men's basketball since 2000 ... Upper Iowa selected Kent McElvania as assistant athletics director for compliance. McElvania has been with the school since 1985 and has been director of admissions since 1998 ... Stevens Tech appointed Tracy King as assistant athletics director and sports information director. King, who succeeds Terry Small, has been assistant sports information director at Seton Hall for two years ... Tim McMurray was elevated to assistant athletics director for development at Southwest Texas State ... Merchant Marine hired Donna Carrado as assistant athletics director for finance and operations. Most recently, Carrado was a member of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games Salt Lake City Organizing Committee and served as general manager for the Deer Valley Resort venue that hosted aerials, moguls and slalom skiing events.
COACHES
Men's basketball -- Jon Jay DeTemple II was selected as head men's basketball coach and student-athlete academic advisor at Teikyo Post. DeTemple was an assistant with the program last season and formerly has been an assistant at Arizona State and New Mexico ... Billy Gillispie was chosen as head coach at UTEP. Gillispie, who replaces Jason Rabedeaux, was an assistant at Illinois for three years ... Dan Dakich, head coach at Bowling Green for the past five seasons, signed a five-year contract.
Men's basketball assistants -- Reggie Theus was announced as a volunteer assistant at Cal State Los Angeles. Theus formerly played professionally in the NBA for 13 years ... Jason Coplan and Kevin Justice were added as assistant coaches at Keene State ... Wheaton (Massachusetts) chose Peter Butler as an assistant ... Southern Maine chose Chris Kumka and Mike Esty as assistant coaches ... Rob Delaleu was hired as an assistant at Bridgewater State. Delaleu spent the 2001-02 season as an assistant coach at Dean College.
Women's basketball -- Oakland head coach Beckie Francis resigned as head coach for health reasons. Francis has guided the program to two Mid-Continent Conference regular-season championships in five seasons. The school appointed Eileen Shea-Hilliard as Francis' successor ... Sue Roarke was hired as head coach at Stevens Tech. Roarke, who replaces Tom Sclafani, was head coach at Russell Sage for five years.
Women's basketball assistants -- Larry Dantzler was chosen as an assistant coach at Lehman ... Keene State tabbed Sarah Linn as an assistant coach ... Tim Smith was appointed as an assistant at Southern Maine ... Delaware added Megan Dellegrotti as an assistant coach. Dellegrotti is a 2002 graduate of the school and was a three-year starting point guard with the team.
Men's and women's equestrian -- Tracey Villaverde resigned as head coach at Pace.
Field hockey assistant -- Delaware hired Amy Cohen as a graduate assistant coach. Cohen is a 2002 Lafayette graduate and was the school's starting goalkeeper for four years.
Football -- Bobby Williams was released as head coach at Michigan State. Williams has led the program since December 1999. The school announced offensive coordinator Morris Watts as interim head coach ... Baylor released Kevin Steele as head coach, effective at the end of the season. Steele has been head coach since 1999 ... Sonny Lubick, head coach at Colorado State since 1993, was awarded a five-year contract extension ... Central Michigan's Mike DeBord signed a contract extension through 2006 ... Vince Arduini resigned after eight seasons as head coach at Kenyon.
Men's and women's golf -- David Neiss was named as head men's coach at Yeshiva. Neiss succeeds Allen Mittleman, who retired ... Ian Freret resigned as head women's coach at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Freret has guided the program since April 2000.
Men's and women's ice hockey assistants -- Southern Maine selected Bernie Michals and John Lauziere as assistant men's coaches.
Men's and women's lacrosse assistants -- Aimee Vaughan was named as a graduate assistant women's coach and Jason Motta was named as a part-time assistant men's coach at Delaware. Vaughan formerly was a soccer and lacrosse player at James Madison. Motta was a four-year midfielder at Delaware before graduating in 2002.
Men's and women's rowing assistants -- Delaware chose Barb Ferrell and Rob Page as part-time assistant women's coaches.
Men's soccer assistant -- Edward Brown was hired as a part-time assistant at Delaware. Brown has played professionally and formerly was an assistant at Johns Hopkins, Towson and American.
Women's soccer -- Utah State's Jen Kennedy Croft resigned as head coach.
Women's soccer assistant -- Christine Huber was hired as an assistant at Teikyo Post.
Softball -- Newbury added Peter Hochman as head coach. From 1995 to 1999, Hochman served as an assistant at Cortland State.
Softball assistant -- Delaware selected Carolyn Wasilewski as a graduate assistant coach. Wasilewski is a 2001 graduate of the school and was a four-year starter at shortstop.
Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Kate Palladino was hired as aquatics director at Pace. Most recently, Palladino has been aquatics director at SUNY Purchase College ... Stevens Tech named Earl Walton as head men's and women's coach to succeed Nancy Bercaw. Walton has been masters swim team coach with Asphalt Green, a swimming and athletics facility in New York City ... Brett Oteri was promoted to head men's and women's coach at Bridgewater State. Oteri has spent the past two years as an assistant coach.
Men's and women's swimming and diving assistants -- Steve Kelly was chosen as an assistant swimming coach and Signe Dahlquist was chosen as diving coach at Wheaton (Massachusetts) ... Rob Maegerle was tabbed as part-time men's and women's swimming and diving coach at Delaware. Maegerle formerly was head coach at the high-school level ... Bridgewater State added Kelly John as an assistant men's and women's coach.
Men's and women's tennis -- Sacramento State hired Sherif Zaher as head men's coach. Zaher, a two-year member of the school's men's team, was a two-time Big Sky Conference most valuable player.
Men's and women's track and field -- Adams State named John Wallin as assistant men's and women's coach.
Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Wheaton (Massachusetts) appointed Amy Saari as an assistant indoor coach ... Matt Miller was tabbed as an assistant men's coach, and Sally Hirsch, Stephanie Dubois and Miranda Derenburger were named as assistant women's coaches at Southern Maine ... Cal State Los Angeles hired David Rider as an assistant men's and women's coach. Rider formerly was an assistant coach with the program during the 1987-88 season.
Men's and women's volleyball -- Sarah Storms resigned as head women's coach at Upper Iowa. The school appointed assistant coach Jill Roth as interim head coach ... Chuck McCracken resigned as head women's coach at Guilford, effective December 31. McCracken has guided the program for 11 seasons.
Men's and women's volleyball assistant -- Lanaya Shuler was added as an assistant women's coach at Teikyo Post.
STAFF
Academic services -- Kim Cox resigned as academic coordinator at Belmont. The school chose Colette Keyser to serve in an interim capacity.
Athletic trainer -- Incarnate Word hired B.J. Lough as head athletic trainer. Lough has been an assistant trainer at Findlay.
Marketing/promotions assistant -- Delaware chose Neena Oduro as an athletics marketing intern.
Sports information -- Teikyo Post hired Todd McEvoy as sports information director to succeed Tom Curle. McEvoy was assistant sports information director last year ... Joe Austin was tabbed as interim sports information director at Concordia (Minnesota). Austin, who is completing his third season as an assistant football coach at the school, replaces Dave Wright.
Sports information assistant -- Siena chose Jennifer Valore as sports information/marketing assistant. Valore spent two years as a sports information graduate assistant at Drexel and has worked as a coach with Tri-State Lacrosse in New Jersey for the past three months.
ASSOCIATIONS
The National Soccer Coaches Association of America named Chris Wyche as marketing director. Wyche has been associate athletics director for external affairs at Arkansas State.
NATIONAL OFFICE
Jill Ward was promoted to associate director of membership services at the national office ... Matt Banker was chosen as coordinator for membership services at the national office, effective December 2. Banker has been a case worker at Wausau Insurance ... Renee Grewe was named as an assistant director of enforcement/secondary infractions. Most recently, Grewe has worked as a compliance assistant at Colorado ... Kathryn Yurk was appointed as an assistant director for membership services. Yurk was a special project coordinator for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games organizing committee.
CORRECTION
A change to the Division I men's indoor track and field 55-meter hurdles qualifying standards has been made from those previously released. The provisional standard for the event should be 7.44 seconds with fully automatic timing (FAT), not 7.39 seconds. The automatic standard of 7.23 seconds does not change.
Eric Burdsall, a basketball student-athlete at Lees-McRae, died in an automobile accident November 3. Burdsall was a senior and was entering his second season with the program.
Bowling Green soccer student-athlete Leslie Dawley died after collapsing during a game. She was 18. Dawley, a freshman, tallied six assists in 18 games this season.
Former Ohio State football student-athlete George Hasenohrl died October 31. He was 51. Hasenohrl appeared in two Rose Bowls with the school, was a two-time all-Big Ten Conference defensive tackle and served as co-captain for the team. He played five games with the NFL's New York Giants in 1974 before an injury ended his career.
Gene Rock, a former basketball guard at Southern California, died of cancer October 31. Rock, 80, lettered in 1942, 1943 and 1947.
Jim Cook, head men's golf coach at Memphis, died November 8. He was 62. Cook had guided the program for 32 years.
Former Tulsa football student-athlete and coach Glenn Dobbs died November 12. He was 82. Dobbs played tailback at the school in the early 1940s and was an all-American selection in 1942. From 1961 to 1968, Dobbs guided Tulsa to a 45-37 mark and a victory in the 1964 Bluebonnet Bowl.
Harry Edmund Smith, former president at Austin, died October 24. He was 74.
Chang-Lin Tien, former chancellor at California, died October 26. Chang was 67.
