Alcorn State has appointed Louis Green as athletics academic advisor.
Green, a May 2002 graduate of the school, was a football student-athlete who earned recognition as a first-team all-Southwestern Athletic Conference pick in 2001. He also was named as a Verizon Academic All-District VI selection for two straight years. During the 2001 season, Green led the team in sacks and was second in total tackles. He also ranked fifth in the conference in tackles per game.
A three-year starter, Green was nominated for the John B. McClendon and American Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame postgraduate scholarships and was selected as the recipient of the Alcorn State Coaches award in 1998 and 2000.
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS
James L. Gearity was appointed as president at Belmont Abbey. Gearity has been chief academic office and chief operating officer at Our Lady of the Lake University ... Christopher White resigned as president at Gardner-Webb. White has been president since 1986 ... St. Mary's (Minnesota) President Louis DeThomasis announced plans to retire, effective May 2005 ... Albert C. Yates announced his retirement as president at Colorado State, effective at the end of June 2003.
DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS
St. Edward's promoted Debbie Taylor to director of athletics. Taylor has been associate athletics director and head volleyball coach ... Travis Feezell was named as full-time athletics director at Whitman. Feezell has spent the past six years as head baseball coach at the school and the past two years as part-time athletics director ... James Moran was named as director of athletics at Albertus Magnus. Since 1993, Moran has been assistant athletics director and head cross country coach at St. Joseph (Connecticut).

Minnesota promoted Mike Halloran as associate athletics director/director of athletics development. Halloran has been director of the Williams Fund for the school's men's athletics department for the past two years ... Grace Calhoun was announced as interim associate athletics director for compliance and administration at Dartmouth ... Ball State elevated senior associate athletics director Dick Falls to deputy athletics director and promoted sports information director Joe Hernandez to associate athletics director for external affairs.
ASSISTANT DIRECTOR
OF ATHLETICS
Washington hired Wendy Brown as assistant athletics director for ticket operations. Brown, who succeeds Joe Sharpe, has been assistant athletics director for ticket operations at Maryland for the past four years.
COACHES
Baseball -- Jeremy Farber was chosen as head coach at St. Edward's. Most recently, Farber has been hitting, base running and infield coach and recruiting coordinator at Presbyterian ... Whitman selected Edward G. Morais as head coach and assistant sports information director. Morais replaces Travis Feezell, who accepted responsibilities as full-time athletics director at the school.
Baseball assistant -- Tag Montague was appointed as second assistant at George Washington. Most recently, Montague has been first assistant and recruiting coordinator at Virginia Wesleyan.
Men's basketball -- Tim Buckley was awarded a contract extension through the 2007-08 season as head coach at Ball State. Buckley has guided the team since the 2000-01 season and led the squad to the Mid-American Conference West Division championship last season ... Ohio Valley tabbed Jason Dougherty as interim head coach ... Dennis Nutt, head coach at Southwest Texas, was awarded a contract extension through the 2004-05 season ... Bethany (West Virginia) selected Aaron Huffman to succeed Rob Clune as head men's basketball coach and head men's tennis coach. Huffman has been an assistant men's basketball coach and compliance coordinator at West Liberty State.
Men's basketball assistants -- John Coffino was named as an assistant coach at St. Peter's ... Central Michigan added Mark Bray as coordinator of basketball operations and promoted Dave Grube to associate head coach. Bray has been an assistant basketball coach and head tennis coach at Bluffton, and Grube is beginning his fifth season with the program ... Robert Sommers was chosen as director of basketball operations at DePaul ... Eastern Connecticut State added Bryan Moretti and Matthew Kingsley as assistants ... Jody King was awarded duties as an assistant at Southern Vermont. King spent two years as an assistant at Yeshiva.
Women's basketball assistants -- Russell Sarfaty was chosen as an assistant coach at Winthrop ... DeSales hired Jen Kish as an assistant coach. Kish, who succeeds Sheri Melady, has been assistant girls' varsity coach and head junior varsity coach at Quakertown (Pennsylvania) High School since 1998 ... Mari McClure assumed responsibilities as an assistant coach at Colgate ... Merchant Marine hired Doug Carter as assistant women's basketball and assistant softball coach. For the past two years, Carter has served as assistant women's basketball coach and intramural director at Lock Haven ... Kristyn Grassi and Jim Dinello were selected as assistants at Eastern Connecticut State.
Men's and women's golf -- South Alabama's Jim Johnson resigned as head men's coach. Johnson has guided the program since 1999 and was the Sun Belt Conference coach of the year in 2002. T.J. Jackson, head women's coach at the school, assumed additional responsibilities as interim head men's coach.
Men's and women's golf assistant -- South Alabama chose Jeral Williams as an assistant.
Men's and women's ice hockey -- Steve Ouellette was hired as head women's coach at Salve Regina. Ouellette has been a program co-director for the Massachusetts Hockey's Girls/Women's Satellite Training program for the last three years and formerly was the women's club coach at Wheaton (Massachusetts).
Men's and women's lacrosse -- Nichols added Tom Langan as head men's coach. Langan, who succeeds Mark Kelley, has been an assistant at Marymount (Virginia) ... Judy Turner Baxter was chosen as head women's coach at Lehigh ... Curry named Neal Anderson as head men's coach.
Men's and women's lacrosse assistants -- Columbia selected Amy Noble as an assistant women's coach ... Adam Torrisi was appointed as an assistant men's coach at Montclair State.
Softball -- Minnesota-Crookston named Ryan Anderson as head coach.
Softball assistants -- Stacey Schramm and Suzanne Scheef were added as assistant coaches at Bucknell ... Nova Southeastern hired Cristina Cuadros as an assistant.
Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Daniella Irle was hired as head women's coach at Tulane. The program is scheduled to begin competition in 2003-04. Irle has served as head coach at Fresno State for 10 years.
Men's and women's swimming and diving assistants -- Stuart Wilson was awarded duties as an assistant coach at Georgia Tech ... Betsy Matheney was hired as an assistant women's coach at Eastern Connecticut State.
Men's and women's tennis -- Randi Greenberg and Debbie Schwartz were hired as head coaches at Yeshiva to replace Heidi Nathan, who resigned after two years. Greenberg has been league coordinator of World Team Tennis, and Schwartz has been coaching at the high-school level.
Men's and women's track and field -- Chris Huffins was appointed as director of track and field and cross country at California.
Men's and women's track and field assistant -- Cal State Los Angeles hired Sheila Hudson as assistant men's and women's coach. Hudson is the current American records-holder for the women's indoor and outdoor triple jump and has captured USA national outdoor championships in 1987, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1995 and 1998.
Men's and women's volleyball -- Sean Donahue was elevated to head coach at St. Edward's. Donahue was an assistant with the program last year and succeeds Debbie Taylor, who was named as athletics director at the school ... Wentworth Institute awarded head women's volleyball coach Jason Jeffers with additional responsibilities as head men's volleyball coach. Jeffers has guided the women's program since 1999.
Wrestling assistant -- Wesley Watson was hired as an assistant at Mercyhurst.
STAFF
Academic services -- Nicole Weston was chosen as an academic coordinator at Miami (Florida). Since August 2002, Weston has worked as an intern with the school's athletics academic services.
Athletic trainer -- Washington promoted Kevin Messick to head athletic trainer. Messick has been associate head athletic trainer for the past two years.
Facilities -- Pat Quinn was named as athletics department liaison for facilities and scheduling at Ball State.
Marketing/promotions -- Emporia State named Shane Shivley as director of athletics marketing. Shivley has spent the past two years as an intern in the school's athletics department.
Media relations assistant -- Maine hired Julia Eberhart as an assistant manager for athletics media relations. Eberhart has been an assistant sports information director at South Dakota since August 2001.
Sports information -- St. Edward's hired Naveen Boppana as sports information director. For the past two years, Boppana has worked as assistant director of athletics media relations at Holy Cross ... Joe Danahey was appointed as sports information director at San Francisco State. Danahey has been sports information director at Saint Joseph's (Indiana).
Sports information assistant -- Brian Lucas was hired as assistant sports information director at Wisconsin.
NATIONAL OFFICE
Gail Nichol was named as manager of F&IS support services. Nichol has been with Analysts International as a manager of administrative services ... Paula Buckhaulter was named as manager of promotions at the national office. Buckhaulter was a teacher leadership projects manager with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards ... Heidi Clarke was selected as manager of branding at the national office. Clarke has been an account supervisor in the client service department at Benchmark Marketing Services.
AGREEMENTS
The American Volleyball Coaches Association and the National College Sports Network announced a multi-year agreement that includes broadcasting an "AVCA Match of the Week" during the regular season. The NCSN is the first 24-hour all-college sports network in the nation. A similar agreement also was announced between the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and NCSN.
CORRECTION
A story in the October 14 issue of The NCAA News incorrectly stated that the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee (MOIC) would ask the Division II Men's Basketball Committee to reconsider awarding the 2005 Division II Men's Basketball Championship to the University of North Dakota. The MOIC in fact is asking that the NCAA Executive Committee establish criteria for NCAA championship sites that eliminate visibility of American Indian mascots, logos and symbols, and that the Executive Committee apply any standards adopted related to site selection for NCAA championships to pre-existing agreements and contracts, including the 2005 Men's Elite Eight.
Earl Bell, Steve Scott, Gwen Torrence and Larry Young were selected as the 2002 inductees into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. Bell, a pole vaulter, captured three NCAA outdoor championships (1975, 1976, 1977) and two NCAA indoor titles (1975, 1976) at Arkansas State. The three-time Olympian earned a bronze medal at the 1984 Olympic Games. Scott, the 1978 NCAA 1,500 meter outdoor champion at UC Irvine and two-time Olympian, is the U.S. current record holder for the indoor mile, outdoor mile and 2,000 meters. Torrence, who captured the 1987 NCAA outdoor 100 meter and 200 meter championships at Georgia, earned a gold medal in the 200 meters during the 1992 Olympics and earned gold medals in the 4x100 meter relay in the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games. Young, a race walker, attended Columbia College (Missouri) and won bronze medals at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics.
Ben Eastman, a former world record holder in track, died at the age of 91. Eastman, who earned a bachelor's degree and a master of business administration degree from Stanford, established world records in the outdoor 400 meters, 440 yards, 500 meters, 600 yards, 800 meters and 880 yards between 1932 and 1934. The former part-time track coach at Santa Clara also earned a silver medal in the 400 meters at the 1932 Olympics.
Philip Gray Griffin, a soccer student-athlete at Furman, died in an automobile accident October 11. He was 18. Griffin, captain of the U.S. under-17 national team that competed in the World Championships last year, started 12 games at defender for Furman this year.
Jim Brakefield, a former football coach at Wofford and Appalachian State, died October 14. Brakefield, 83, helped developed the wishbone offense in football. He was an assistant and head coach at Wofford in addition to serving as head coach at Appalachian State for nine seasons before retiring after the 1979 season.
Richard T. Cofield, a basketball student-athlete at Westfield State, collapsed and died after a routine practice. Cofield, 19, was a criminal justice major.
