Virgin Islands has selected LaVerne E. Ragster as president. Ragster succeeds Orville Kean, who had been president since 1990. Ragster has been with the school for more than 20 years. Before her most recent post as senior vice-president and provost, Ragster taught as an assistant professor and professor of marine biology and served as chair of the division of science and mathematics. She also worked as acting vice-president for research and land grant affairs and served as vice-president for research and public service. Ragster holds affiliations with various organizations, including the Caribbean Studies Association, Caribbean Natural Resources Institute, Caribbean Conservation Association and the Nature Conservancy. Ragster earned her bachelor of science degree in biology and chemistry at Miami (Florida) in 1973, a master of science in biology at San Diego State in 1975 and a Ph.D in biology at UC San Diego in 1980. CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS Jorge I. Velez was named as chancellor at Puerto Rico-Mayaguez ... Florida State's Talbot D'Alemberte resigned as president ... West Alabama named Richard Holland as president. Holland has been fulfilling the position on an interim basis ... Lawrence Pettit, president at Indiana (Pennsylvania), announced plans to retire, effective in 2004 ... Cortland State's Judson H. Taylor announced his retirement, effective July 2003 ... James G. Moseley was named as president at Franklin. Moseley succeeds Paul Marion ... Bob Suzuki announced plans to retire as president at Cal Poly Pomona, effective at the end of the 2002-03 academic year. DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS Puerto Rico-Mayaguez named Héctor B. Figueroa as athletics director and men's softball coach ... Robert Brown, athletics director at New Orleans, was chosen as vice-chancellor for governmental and community affairs at the school. SENIOR WOMAN Kathleen Heitzman was appointed as senior woman administrator at New Jersey Institute of Technology. Heitzman, who replaces Sharon Manning Beverly, also enters her second season as the school's compliance officer ... Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis hired Denise O'Grady as senior woman administrator and assistant athletics director. O'Grady has been an assistant director of membership services at the NCAA national office. FACULTY ATHLETICS St. Mary's (Maryland) chose Jeff Byrd as faculty athletics representative. Byrd, who succeeds Don Stabile, formerly fulfilled FAR responsibilities at the school during the 1996-97 academic year. ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS Larry Ryan was hired as senior associate athletics director at Evansville. For the past two years, Ryan has worked as director of annual giving for athletics at New Mexico. The school also elevated Cory Schwartz and Sarah Solinsky to associate athletics directors ... Nona Richardson was chosen as an associate athletics director at Ball State. Richardson has been at Valparaiso since 1996, most recently serving as associate athletics director and senior woman administrator ... Betsy Mosher was selected as associate athletics director for compliance services at Massachusetts. ASSISTANT DIRECTORS Niagara selected Martin Biniasz as assistant athletics director for marketing and promoted John Munro to assistant athletics director for sports medicine. Biniasz has been manager for marketing/fund-raising events at Western New York Public Broadcasting for two years. Munro has been head athletic trainer at the school for 10 years ... Illinois chose Kathy Kent as an assistant athletics director for event management. Since 1997, Kent has been a member of the event management staff at Nebraska ... Whit Babcock was hired as assistant athletics director and executive director of development for athletics at West Virginia. During a five-year tenure at Auburn, Babcock has served as assistant athletics director for development, director of athletics development and assistant director of athletics development ... Texas-Pan American promoted Chris Uchacz to assistant athletics director for academic support and student services. Uchacz, who has been an athletics administrator with the school for four years, most recently has served as director of academic support and student services for athletics ... Laura Liesman was chosen as an assistant athletics director at Saint Benedict ... Penn State elevated David Baker to assistant athletics director. Baker came to the school in 1974 as an assistant sports information director and most recently has been coordinator of administrative and business services. COACHES Baseball -- Puerto Rico-Mayaguez hired Félix R. Vega as head coach ... Central Michigan's Judd Folske resigned as head coach, but he will continue with the school as an administrative assistant to the athletics director until his retirement June 30. Folske has led the program since 1999. The school selected assistant coach Steve Jaksa as interim head coach for the 2003 season. Baseball assistants -- Rice named David Pierce as an assistant coach ... Texas-Pan American tabbed Kiki Trevino as an assistant coach. Trevino formerly was a graduate assistant with the school and spent last summer as an assistant with the Edinburg Roadrunners of the Central League ... New York Institute of Technology named Ray Gianelli as an assistant coach to succeed Michael Caulfield, who resigned. Men's basketball -- Puerto Rico-Mayaguez appointed Juan Flores Monge as head coach ... Ed DeChellis was awarded a five-year contract extension through 2006-07 as head coach at East Tennessee State. DeChellis begins his seventh season as head coach of the program ... St. Bonaventure awarded head coach Jan van Breda Kolff with a one-year contract extension through the 2006-07 season. Van Breda Kolff guided the squad to an appearance in the NIT last season, his first as head coach of the program ... Christopher Wood was hired as head men's basketball coach, intramural director and facilities coordinator at Bard. Wood, who replaces Greg Dixon, formerly was an assistant women's basketball coach at Lyndon State College and Southern New Hampshire ... Steve Lappas, head coach at Massachusetts, was awarded a one-year contract extension through the 2006-07 season. Lappas, who enters his second season as head coach of the program, formerly was head coach at Villanova and Manhattan. Men's basketball assistants -- Rob Wilkes was chosen as an assistant coach at Old Dominion ... Adam Polletta and Eric Simonelli were added as assistant coaches at Roger Williams ... Central Michigan hired Marc Comstock as an assistant coach to succeed Jeff Smith, who became an assistant at Oakland. Comstock was head coach at Emporia State from 1999 to 2001 ... Roshown McLeod was appointed as an assistant at Fairfield ... NYU named Josh Meyer as an assistant ... Don Burgess and Grafton Young were added as assistant coaches at VMI ... New Jersey Institute of Technology promoted Kim Bowen to interim head coach to replace Sharon Manning Beverly. Bowen was an assistant last season. Women's basketball assistants -- DeAnn Craft was hired as an assistant coach at Texas-Pan American. Craft formerly was head coach at Lamar for four seasons ... Coastal Carolina chose Frank Moorhead as an assistant ... Bill Hyden was hired as an assistant coach at Tampa. For the past three seasons, Hyden has been an assistant at Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis ... Lehigh added Tempie Brown as an assistant coach. Last season, Brown was an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan. Men's and women's cross country assistant -- Oneonta State hired Bobby Wilson as an assistant cross country and track and field coach. Football -- Guy Morriss was awarded a contract extension through 2007 as head coach at Kentucky. Morriss is in his second season as head coach ... Roy Kidd announced his retirement as head coach at Eastern Kentucky, effective at the end of the season. Kidd has led the program to NCAA Division I-AA national championships in 1979 and 1982 and has been selected as Ohio Valley Conference coach of the year 10 times in 39 years with the school. Men's and women's golf assistant -- Nova Southeastern hired Leigh Many as an assistant men's and women's coach. Many has been an assistant at the American Junior Golf Association. Men's and women's gymnastics assistants -- Trent Dimas was named as an assistant women's coach at Yale. Dimas, who was a 1992 Olympic gold medalist in the high bars, served as an official judge for the Federation of International Gymnastics from 1996 to 2000 ... Julie Anne Fabsik-Swarts was named as an assistant at Pennsylvania. Men's and women's lacrosse -- DeSales promoted Donovan Quill to head men's coach. Quill, who succeeds Fran Meagher, has spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach. Men's and women's lacrosse assistants -- Merchant Marine hired Scott Coleman as an assistant coach. During the 2002 season, Coleman worked as an assistant at Ithaca ... Yale selected Michael Baglio as an assistant men's coach. Women's rowing -- Chris Martel accepted responsibilities as head rowing coach at Regis (Massachusetts) to replace Anna Pepin. Most recently, Martel was an assistant rowing coach and coordinator with the Simsbury (Connecticut) Summer Rowing Program. Men's soccer -- Puerto Rico-Mayaguez named Abner Rodríguez as head coach ... Greg Kosmider was hired as head coach at Alverno. Men's soccer assistants -- Kevin Fitzgibbon and Jimmy Phillips were added as assistants at Bridgewater State (Massachusetts). Fitzgibbon has been an assistant coach at Bishop Feehan (Massachusetts) High School, and Phillips has been a volunteer coach for the Randolph (Massachusetts) Youth Soccer Association. Women's soccer assistant -- Raymond Due resigned as an assistant at New York Institute of Technology. Softball -- Francisco M. Cintrón was tabbed as head coach at Puerto Rico-Mayaguez ... Alverno selected Heather Burtman as head softball coach, assistant basketball coach and sports information director ... Bill Goc was hired as head softball coach and athletics facilities coordinator at Hilbert. Goc is a 2002 graduate of Cazenovia ... Columbia appointed Kayla Noonan as interim head coach for the 2002-03 season. For the past two seasons, Noonan, who takes over for Christina Vogt, has served as an assistant with the program. Softball assistant -- Stephen F. Austin selected Aimee Vaughn as an assistant coach to replace Monica Armendarez. Vaughn is a 2002 graduate of Alabama-Birmingham, where last season she started all 61 games at third base and led the team in home runs with six. Men's and women's squash -- Williams named Zafrir Levy as head men's and women's coach, succeeding Dave Johnson as men's coach and Julie Greenwood as women's coach. Johnson will continue with the school as assistant dean and head men's tennis coach. Greenwood is on sabbatical. Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Puerto Rico-Mayaguez chose Iván Romaguera as head men's and women's coach ... Phil Rhoade, head swimming and diving coach at Minnesota State Mankato, announced his retirement, effective at the end of the season. Rhoade, a five-time North Central Conference coach of the year, has led the program since 1982 ... Cortland State hired Brian Tobin as head men's and women's coach. During the 2001-02 season, Tobin was a volunteer assistant men's and women's coach at North Carolina State. Men's and women's swimming and diving assistants -- Holy Cross named Kim Rinaldi as diving coach for the 2002-03 season ... Niagara appointed Candy Kane as an assistant coach. Kane formerly was head women's coach at the school from 1978 to 1982. Men's and women's tennis --Eduardo Soltero was chosen as head men's coach at Puerto Rico-Mayaguez ... Sarah Marks was chosen as interim head women's tennis coach and assistant women's squash coach at Williams. Men's and women's tennis assistants -- Mikail Lawal was selected as an assistant men's and women's coach at Wright State. Men's and women's track and field -- Jorge García accepted responsibilities as head men's and women's track and field and cross country coach at Puerto Rico-Mayaguez ... Gary Wieneke, head cross country and track and field coach at Illinois, announced plans to retire after the 2002-03 outdoor track and field season. Wieneke has guided the cross country program to one Big Ten Conference crown in 36 years and has led the track and field program to six outdoor conference titles and five indoor conference championships in 27 seasons ... Adelphi hired Kevin McQueen as head men's and women's track coach and assistant cross country coach to succeed Joe Bonvincino, who will continue as head men's and women's cross country coach. McQueen has been a volunteer coach at Uniondale (New York) High School. Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Minnesota hired Matt Bingle as an assistant women's coach. For the past five years, Bingle has been an assistant women's cross country coach and track and field coach and recruiting coordinator at Eastern Michigan ... Heather Crosby, Todd Linder and Jennifer Rice were added as assistant men's and women's coaches at Sacred Heart ... Cal State Northridge chose Dale Cowper as an assistant coach. Men's and women's volleyball -- Israel García Lucca was named as head men's coach and Marta Mora was named as head women's volleyball and tennis coach at Puerto Rico-Mayaguez ... Debby Colberg received a contract extension through the 2004 season as head coach at Sacramento State. Colberg, who has been head coach of the program since 1976, captured an NCAA Division II national championship in 1981 ... Towson awarded head women's coach Chris Riley a three-year contract extension. Last year, Riley guided the team to the America East regular season championship and was named conference coach of the year ... Kay Wolferstetter was elevated to head volleyball coach and named assistant softball coach at Alverno. Wolferstetter was an assistant volleyball coach last season ... Bard named Sean Riley as head men's and women's coach. Riley was a four-year member of the volleyball squad at New Paltz State, where he helped the school to an appearance in the 2002 Eastern College Athletic Conference championship. Men's and women's volleyball assistant -- New York Institute of Technology added Dan Prisco as an assistant women's coach. Wrestling -- Pablo Madera was selected as head coach at Puerto Rico-Mayaguez ... C.D. Mock was named as head coach at North Carolina, effective at the end of the 2002-03 season ... Cortland State appointed Brad Bruhn as head coach. During the 1997-98 and 2000-02 seasons, Bruhn served as an assistant coach at Wisconsin-La Crosse. Wrestling assistants -- Brian Borkowski and Pat Brown were tabbed as assistant coaches at Bridgewater State (Massachusetts). STAFF Administrative -- Ramani Hunter accepted duties as a visiting event coordinator at Illinois. Most recently, Hunter has been an administrative intern for the city of Dublin, Ohio. Athletic trainers -- Alverno hired Jim Donaldson as an athletic trainer ... Ed Morgan was tabbed as head athletic trainer and fitness and wellness director at Bard. Morgan, who has been head athletic trainer at Miami Beach (Florida) Senior High School, succeeds Jeffrey Carter ... Alfredo Texidor was appointed as an athletic trainer at Puerto Rico-Mayaguez. Assistant athletic trainers -- Rhode Island College hired Andrea Dunn as an assistant trainer. Most recently, Dunn has worked as an assistant athletic trainer and science teacher at Mainland (Florida) High School ... Dean Martino was appointed as an assistant trainer at Saint Rose. For the past year, Martino has been a graduate assistant athletic trainer at the school ... Illinois added Jim Turk and Tad Leusch as assistant athletic trainers. Turk has been a graduate assistant with the school for the past two seasons, and Leusch was an assistant athletic trainer at Carson-Newman ... Beth Drayer and Joe Gonzalez were chosen as assistant athletic trainers at Loyola Marymount to replace Joe Ballard and Sandy Olsen. Drayer has been a graduate teaching fellow at Oregon, and Gonzalez has been with Tenet Health Systems at the USC University Hospital. Development -- Syracuse promoted Joe Manhertz to director of development for athletics. Manhertz has been associate director of development. The school also elevated Lisa Sinopoli to director of the Orange Pack. Sinopoli has been assistant director of development for athletics. Equipment manager -- Niagara chose Chanin Martin as equipment manager. For the past four years, Martin has been a volunteer equipment manager for the school's ice hockey teams. Media relations -- Western Kentucky's Paul Just announced plans to retire as director of athletics media relations, effective October 31. The school named Brian Fremund as director of athletics media relations. Sports information assistant -- Mercyhurst hired Mark Fisher as assistant sports information director. CONFERENCES The Southwestern Athletic Conference hired Clarissa Clark and Jennifer Huggins as interns. Clark is a 2002 graduate of Samford, where she earned a degree in business administration. Huggins is a 2002 graduate of Alabama, where she earned a degree in communications and information systems ... Greg Sankey was hired as associate commissioner at the Southeastern Conference. Sankey has been with the Southland Conference since 1992 and had served as commissioner since 1996. ASSOCIATIONS The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics announced the selection of Jason Galaska as assistant administrator/association liaison. Galaska succeeds Jude Killy, who resigned to become director of athletics development operations at Pittsburgh. Since 1998, Galaska has been at Massachusetts, most recently working as assistant athletics director for tickets and game operations. NATIONAL OFFICE Natalie Butler was hired as an assistant director of enforcement, effective November 11. Butler has been head men's and women's tennis coach at Chicago. Former Denver track and field athlete Jerome Biffle died of pulmonary fibrosis September 4 at the age of 74. Biffle was the 1950 NCAA outdoor long jump champion and was a 1952 Olympic gold medalist in the long jump. Leon Hart, the 1949 football Heisman Trophy winner, died September 24. He was 73. Hart helped Notre Dame capture national championships in 1946, 1947 and 1949 and won three NFL championships in 1952, 1953 and 1957 as a member of the Detroit Lions. Bob Hayes, an Olympic gold medalist and former receiver with the NFL's Dallas Cowboys, died September 18 of kidney failure. He was 59. Hayes, who attended Florida A&M, earned two gold medals at the 1964 Olympics in the 100 meters and the 4x100 relay. He competed with the Dallas Cowboys for 10 of his 11 years in the NFL and helped Dallas win its first Super Bowl in 1971. Michael Bochette, Jr., a sophomore football fullback at Cumberland, died recently. He was 20. Sasja Odenyo, a former women's soccer player at Florida International, and Theresa Wint, a former student athletic trainer at Florida International, died recently in an automobile collision. Both were spring 2002 graduates of the school and had been traveling with the Florida Rockets soccer team of the Broward Women's League. Odenyo, who was the Sun Belt Conference tournament MVP during her junior season, was 22. Wint was 21. Former Oregon football coach and athletics administrator Len Casanova died September 30. He was 97. Casanova served as head coach at the school from 1951 to 1966 and also was athletics director for four years after relinquishing head coaching duties. The former president of the American Football Coaches Association also was head coach at Santa Clara and Pittsburgh. Marshall Clark, a former track and field and cross country coach, died September 30. He was 68. Clark served as head cross country coach and assistant track and field at Stanford from 1968 to 1978 and established the school's women's cross country program in 1977. Clark spent two years as an assistant athletics director and head track and cross country coach at Montana before moving to San Jose State in 1980, where he was head men's cross country coach and assistant men's track and field coach. He served head coach of both squads at the school from 1984 to 1988 and went on to become assistant athletics director for facilities and game management, a position he held through 1991. Clark had been coaching cross country and track and field at Saratoga (California) High School since his retirement from San Jose State. Dennis Goodson Jr., a former basketball player at New Jersey City, died June 25 of heart failure caused by complications from a blood clot in his leg. Goodson, 36, competed as a point guard with the school from 1983 to 1987 and was a starter on the school's first Final Four team in 1986. --Compiled by Leilana McKindra GENERAL
