Wheaton (Massachusetts) put on a superior performance in winning its fourth consecutive Division III Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships team title March 8-9 at Ohio Northern.

The Lyons became the first Division III institution to win four straight track and field team titles, either indoor or outdoor. Wheaton racked up 65 1/2 points, just missing the championships' high of 66, set by Christopher Newport in 1988.

Making the Lyons' effort even more impressive was that they established meet records in each of the four events they won. Leading the way was Shimera Daniels in the long jump (19 feet, 6 3/4 inches) and the triple jump (41 feet, 5 inches).

"I'm happy that I reached my goal of breaking both records," Daniels said. "The key to my success was staying in it mentally and keeping my technique."

Amber James also played a part in two records. She blazed to victory in the 400-meter dash in 55.46 seconds, and joined with Tessa Donaghue, Niara Woods and April Butler to win the 1,600-meter relay in 3 minutes, 48.78 seconds. The previous record in the relay had stood for 15 years.

"We set four national records along the way, which is just unbelievable," said Wheaton head coach Paul Souza. "This is testimony to the team's commitment throughout this year."

Daniels, who was the only double winner, also finished third in the 55-meter dash.

Liz Woodworth won the 800-meter run and Carrie Danielewicz the high jump for Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Wordworth also was a member of the Titans' winning distance medley relay unit.

Jessica Dober had Wisconsin-La Crosse's highest individual finish after coming in third in the 800. The Eagles placed second in the 1,600 relay to Wheaton, which won the event for the third consecutive year.

Daniels in the triple jump and James in the 400 were among four individuals who repeated as champions. Diana Lawson of New Jersey City won the 55-meter dash for the second year in row, and Healy Thompson of Williams earned her second shot put title after first winning in 2000.
