Augsburg continued its dominance of the Division III Wrestling Championships, edging Upper Iowa and Wartburg and claiming the Auggies' third straight team championship.

The championships were held at the First Union Center in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, March 1-2.

Leading before heading into the final bouts, Augsburg held of Upper Iowa's challenge. Both Upper Iowa and Augsburg had three finalists.

Upper Iowa's Jesus Wilson gave the Peacocks their first opportunity to move closer to Augsburg in the 141-pound final. Wilson, the 2000 champion, took an 8-4 lead to the third period against Wisconsin-La Crosse's Brady Cudd. Cudd tied the match by catching Wilson and scoring four points. With the advantage time gained earlier in the match, Wilson secured the victory.

Wilson said he was attempting a combination to pin Cudd, which would have helped Upper Iowa's team score significantly.

"I was just trying to help our team, and I went for a big move that got me in trouble," said Wilson. "But I recovered and won the match."

With Wilson's win, the Peacocks moved into a second-place tie with Wartburg at 81 points. Upper Iowa had two finalists with a chance to catch Augsburg, sitting in first with 83.

The key to the team championship came in the 165-pound class. Augsburg's Tony Abbott and Upper Iowa's Jorge Borgen faced off in a tight match. Abbott scored a second-period escape and defeated Borgen with the riding time advantage, despite being slapped with two stalling calls and a penalty point in the third period.

"I knew it was close, and I knew that one or two of us were going to have to win, for sure," said Abbott. "My match was really important, because I was wrestling a guy from Upper Iowa, and that's a big swing either way, whoever wins. I knew if I would win, it would help seal the deal."

Augsburg coach Jeff Swenson saw this pivotal match as a senior wrestling his best when needed.

"He was the most improved wrestler we had as a freshman, from freshman to sophomore, from sophomore to junior and from junior to senior," Swenson said. "He just kept on getting better and better, and that showed today."

The title was Augsburg's sixth in the last eight years. Wartburg and Upper Iowa finished tied for second, followed by Wisconsin-La Crosse and Buena Vista.

In the 125-pound final, Jamie Taxted from Buena Vista defeated Ithaca's Carlos Restrepo, 7-3. Taxted's finish helped the Beavers claim fifth place.

At 133 pounds, Loras' Steve Martin and Ithaca's Tom Hall faced off in an unlikely bout -- both wrestlers were unseeded going into the tournament. Hall capped an improbable run by defeating Martin, 10-6.

Manchester's Darrell Carr pinned top-seeded Garrett Kurth of Luther in the 149-pound title match, helping the school to an eighth-place finish.
