St. Augustine's won its third consecutive team title in the Division II Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships in dramatic fashion May 23-25 at Angelo State.

The Falcons trailed North Dakota State by one point heading into the final event -- the 1,600-meter relay. The St. Augustine's quartet of Georgia Mullings, Camethia Baker, Shakirah Rutherford and Libia Rodriguez responded with a winning time of 3 minutes, 36.86 seconds to earn 10 team points and a 54-53 victory.

North Dakota State placed second in the relay at 3 minutes, 38.54 seconds. The eight team points left the Bison one point shy of the title but still represented the best team finish for the institution in the championships' history.

Abilene Christian and Western State tied for third with 48 points.

St. Augustine's title is its fourth overall. The Falcons finished second to North Dakota State in the 2002 indoor track and field championships.

Rodriguez also was a key contributor in the individual events for St. Augustine's. She won the 400-meter dash and placed third in the 200-meter dash.

Samayah Islam was the runner-up in the 100-meter high hurdles for the Falcons.

North Dakota State received individual second-place efforts from Tamara Brudy in the 400 and Amanda Thieschafer in the triple jump.

Abilene Christian's Maresa Cadienhead set a meet record in the high jump, clearing the bar at 6 feet, 4 3/4 inches. Alisha Williams (3,000-meter run) and Rebekah Mackie (10,000-meter run) were event winners for Western State.

Nicole Duncan of Cal State Los Angeles became only the second athlete to win three individual events in a meet in the championships' history. She sprinted to wins in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, and flew to the long jump title. Chandra Sturrup of Norfolk State won the same three events in 1992.

Ashland teammates Adriane Blewitt and Jackie Jeschelnig, and Morningside's Meredith Davis, also set meet records. Blewitt heaved the shot put 55 feet, 10 1/2 inches, and Jeschelnig tossed the hammer 212 feet, 9 inches. Davis compiled 5,670 points in winning the heptathlon.
