The Division II Women's Basketball Championship game March 23 in Rochester, Minnesota, was billed as Cal Poly Pomona vs. Southeastern Oklahoma State, but there was an intriguing individual matchup on the marquee as well. The title game pitted the Division II Women's Basketball Player of the Year, Cal Poly Pomona's Lauri McIntosh, and a player averaging 31.5 points a game in Southeastern Oklahoma State's Brandi Robinson.
McIntosh matched Robinson's scoring average by pouring in 31 points and grabbing 11 rebounds to help Cal Poly Pomona to its second consecutive national title March 23 with a 74-62 win. Meanwhile, the Broncos' defense held Robinson scoreless for the first 18 minutes of the game. She eventually fouled out with 4:26 remaining and tallied just six points.
"McIntosh is a great player and she showed why she's the national player of the year," Southeastern Oklahoma State head coach Nick Keith said.
"This is what we played for," said McIntosh, who was named the most outstanding player of the tournament. "We were not going to let anyone stop us from getting here."
The Broncos trailed only once early on, and a 12-1 run at the end of the first half gave Cal Poly Pomona a 30-18 edge at intermission. The Broncos then extended the lead to 20 points at 46-26 andeffectively put the game out of reach. Southeastern Oklahoma State never got within 10 thereafter.
Cal Poly Pomona has won five national titles, tying North Dakota State for the most by any one institution.
"It was an extremely hard-fought game. Both teams came out with lots of intensity and we played tough," Cal Poly Pomona head coach Paul Thomas said of the victory.
McIntosh and Aprile Powell, who scored 20 points and pulled down nine rebounds, combined to score 51 of the Broncos' 74 points in the title game. Tera Newnam led Southeastern Oklahoma State with 17 points and nine rebounds.
McIntosh and Powell headed the all-tournament team, along with Robinson, and Glenville State's Amanda Mortelette and Tracy Wyatt.
Cal Poly Pomona advanced to the championship game with a 74-62 win over Glenville State in the semifinals. Southeastern Oklahoma State defeated South Dakota State, 77-67, to advance.
