Miscellaneous: Valdosta State University quarterback Dusty Bonner was selected December 7 for the second consecutive year as the winner of the Harlon Hill Trophy, presented annually to the Division II football player of the year. Bonner received 209 points in the voting, compared to 201 for Grand Valley State University quarterback Curt Anes. It was the closest vote in the 16-year history of the award. Bonner became only the second player to claim the award twice. Running back Johnny Bailey from Texas A&M University-Kingsville won the award three straight times from 1987 to 1989. Bonner led the Blazers to an 11-0 regular-season record and a No. 1 national ranking entering the playoffs. He completed 281 of 319 passes for 3,214 yards and 43 touchdowns in 2001 and threw for 98 touchdowns over two years. He was Gulf South Conference offensive player of the year for the second consecutive year this season after completing more than 72 percent of his passes. He accounted for eight touchdowns in a game against top-ranked Delta State University, throwing for six and running for two. The Harlon Hill Trophy is voted on by Division II sports information directors and is sponsored by Coca-Cola, the Florence (Alabama) Gas Department, the Real Yellow Pages from BellSouth and Northwest Airlink.
