The last race of the Division II Men's Swimming and Diving Championships March 16 determined the champion in a two-team battle between Cal State Bakersfield and North Dakota.

The Roadrunners entered the final event -- the 400-yard freestyle relay -- needing only to finish to secure the trophy. Cal State Bakersfield's Jacob Fraire delivered by anchoring a fourth-place finish for the relay squad to give the Roadrunners a 529-507 victory and championship title No. 12.

Despite the narrow margin of victory, little else about the 2002 championship differed from last year's. Southern Connecticut State's Ben Michaelson picked up four individual titles to add to the two he already owned from 2001. Those repeat wins came in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly swims.

Cal State Bakersfield's reigning distance king, Vlasta Burda, added wins in the 200-, 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle events and finished second in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Other top performances came from Fraire, who won both individual medley events for the Roadrunners, and Brian Pursley, who claimed the 100-yard breaststroke for Colorado School of Mines.

The victory was especially nostalgic for the Roadrunners. Orlando, Florida, the site of the 2002 championship, was the site of the team's first two titles in 1986 and 1987.

"North Dakota gave us a great challenge," head coach Bob Steele said, "but we won more events and had more great swims.

"We knew the contributions we would get from our top six, but the difference is what I call 'our bench.' In the end, it was our depth that put us over the top."

In diving, a new champion emerged. Shawn Colten grabbed both springboard events for Clarion, earning him recognition as diver of the meet.
