A clash of Pacific-10 Conference men's soccer titans entertained the crowd at Southern Methodist University's Gerald J. Ford Stadium at the final of the Men's College Cup. And with the title on the line and time running out, UCLA found the fortune it needed to secure a 1-0 win over Pac-10 rival Stanford in the December 15 match.

The College Cup final culminated a year in Division I soccer dominated by West Coast teams. The Women's College Cup final featured West Coast Conference foes Portland and Santa Clara.

Stanford, facing UCLA for the third time this year, was seeking the charm, but it was UCLA that took home its fourth men's soccer title and first since 1997. The Bruins also won championships in 1985 and 1990.

"It's kind of surreal," said UCLA head coach Tom Fitzgerald. "You never think it can happen, but there's the trophy sitting there, so I guess it did."

Defender Aaron Lopez scored off a free kick from midfielder Ryan Futagaki in the 89th minute of the game.

"It was my run and I saw the ball and I knocked it in," said Lopez, the tournament's most outstanding offensive player, of the game-winning goal.

Bruins goalkeeper Zach Wells, named the most outstanding defensive player, recorded his first shutout of the tournament, making one save to keep Stanford at bay.

All three matches this year between UCLA and Stanford were decided late in the game, one in overtime, proving the two conference rivals were evenly matched.

UCLA, which finished the season 18-3-3, won its semifinal game over Maryland, 2-1, when Adolpho Gregorio converted a late penalty kick. Stanford (18-5-2) beat Creighton by the same score on an overtime goal by Chad Marshall.
