Three individual champions and three triple-jump place winners lifted LSU back to the top of the Division I Women's Track and Field Championships March 8-9 at Arkansas.

The Tigers scored 57 points in winning its first team title since 1997 and division-leading ninth crown overall. Two-time defending champion UCLA was second with 43 points and Florida was third with 35.

Muna Lee won the 200-meter dash and placed third in the 60-meter dash for LSU. She set a meet record of 22.82 seconds in the 200, eclipsing the previous mark of former Tigers standout Peta-Gaye Dowdie by one-hundredth of a second.

Marian Burnett became the first LSU woman to win the 800-meter run indoors with a time of 2:05.33. Burnett stayed with the lead pack for the first 600 meters and then out-sprinted Kristina Bratten of Florida.

"My plan was to stay with the group for 600 meters and turn it on in the end," said Burnett. "The time wasn't as fast as what I thought it would take to win, but I wasn't concerned with the time. I was more concerned with running whatever it took to win."

Nicole Toney posted the Tigers' third winning effort in the triple jump. Teammates Bianca Rockett and Andria Booker finished sixth and eighth, respectively, adding up to 14 team points in the event.

LSU closed the competition with a third-place finish in the 1,600-meter relay as the tandem of Burnett, Lee, Stephanie Durst and Ronetta Smith combined for a season-best time of 3:35.13.

"We needed a solid effort in every area this weekend and we got it," said LSU head coach Pat Henry. "We were consistent, got a few surprises and that's what it takes to win this event."

Darnesha Griffith was an individual winner for UCLA in the high jump. Tracy O'Hara in the pole vault and Lena Nilsson in the mile run both claimed second for the Bruins.

Nilsson also ran the anchor leg for UCLA's victorious distance medley relay unit that also set a meet record of 10 minutes, 58.19 seconds.

Candice Scott led Florida by winning the 20-pound weight throw and placing fourth in the shot put.

A total of six meet records were established. In addition to Lee and UCLA's distance medley relay team, Southern California's Angela Williams (60-meter dash), Illinois' Perdita Felicien (60-meter high hurdles), Arizona's Amy Linnen (pole vault) and Clemson's Jamine Moton (20-pound weight throw) also broke previous marks.

Moton finished second in her event, but is credited with the record since the winner's implement did not meet the specifications in the rules during the postcompetition inspection required for record verification.

The only 2001 champion to win the same event again was South Carolina in the 1,600-meter relay. Tacita Bass and Demetria Washington were members of both teams and were joined this year by LeShinda Demus and Shevon Stoddart.
