Texas-sized teamwork propels Longhorns to World Series title

OMAHA, Nebraska -- Deep in the heart of the Midwest, Texas won its fifth NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, outlasting a spirited effort from South Carolina, 12-6, in the title game June 22.

Longhorns' skipper Augie Garrido became the first coach to win a Men's College World Series crown with two different teams. Garrido led Cal State Fullerton to three titles before taking Texas to the championship. Texas' other championships came in 1949, 1950, 1975 and 1983.

"They redefine the word 'team,' and this game will probably redefine their lives," Garrido said of his Longhorns. "They're the very best at what they're doing today. This national championship went to a group that really deserves it. We knew we had a chance, but so did a lot of other teams."

The Longhorns set the tone early in the title game after spotting South Carolina a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Tim Moss led off with a single and Omar Quintanilla fueled the rally with a double. A two-run triple by Dustin Majewski put Texas ahead. Majewski scored on a sacrifice by Ryan Hubele for a 3-1 Texas lead.

Texas starter Justin Simmons, 16-1 on the year, won his second game of the series after holding the Gamecocks to four runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings of work. Simmons fanned four batters in the outing.

Reliever Huston Street hurled one and two-thirds scoreless innings to pick up a series-record fourth save and win most outstanding player honors. Street, the fourth freshman in history to win the award, allowed one hit and struck out one batter in his 14th save of the year.

Aaron Rawl (7-2), who took the loss, surrendered four runs on five hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings of work.

A three-run homer by Texas' Chris Carmichael helped put the game out of reach in the fifth inning. The home run was just the second of the season for Carmichael, who was making his first College World Series start. The Longhorns manufactured another run in the sixth inning, opening a six-run cushion.

South Carolina did not go away, however. The Gamecocks started chipping away in the seventh on an RBI double by Yaron Peters. Peters scored on a single by Steve Thomas that cut Texas' lead to 8-4. The Gamecocks added a pair of runs in the eighth, aided by a fielder's choice and an interference call on Longhorns second baseman Moss, drawing within two runs of the lead at 8-6.

Texas sealed the victory with a four-run eighth inning that was sparked by a two-run single from Jeff Ontiveros. Street finished the job in the ninth and the Longhorns mobbed him on the field.

"Texas has tremendous players from their pitchers all the way through their lineup," South Carolina coach Jeff Tanner said. "They deserve to be national champions today. We had some opportunities during the game. We didn't play our best today, but don't take anything away from Texas."

Texas finished the year with a 57-15 mark, while South Carolina ended its season with a record of 57-18.

The crowd of 24,089 for the title game helped set a College World Series total attendance record of 223,762 and bumped the average attendance mark to 22,376.

Modifications made to Rosenblatt Stadium's outfield specifications -- the alleys were moved back and the fences were raised -- seemed to keep more balls in the park. In fact, this year's series set the benchmark for doubles with 59 combined, besting the old mark of 58 in 1985. Also, the 33 home runs in the series were the lowest total since 1997.
