Surviving the cut: Minnesota golfers prove worth with first championship

Minnesota did more than just make the cut in men's golf -- it won the title. Amid talk of the university cutting the Gophers' golf program, the team stepped up and captured the school's first Division I Men's Golf Championships team title.

The Gophers shot a six-under-par 278 on the final day of competition for a 1,134 total and a four-stroke victory over top-ranked Georgia Tech. The championship was conducted at Ohio State's Scarlet Golf Course.

Two months ago, school officials recommended cutting the men's and women's golf teams and the men's gymnastics team to meet gender-equity guidelines and help reduce a nearly $21 million deficit in the athletics department budget. Following a public uproar and a $900,000 fund-raising effort by alumni, parents and fans, the sports were given another year.

"That's a lot of motivation, playing to keep your program," said Clemson coach Larry Penley, whose second-ranked team tied for third. "They go from the threat of losing it -- players talking about transferring, trying to find places to play for the rest of their collegiate career -- and now they are national champions."

Minnesota was ranked no higher than 18th in the national polls, and became the first Northern school to win the championship since Ohio State won in 1979.

Weather problems threatened the field of 30 teams to be cut in half after 36 holes, which would have included cutting Minnesota, since the Gophers were 16th after two rounds. But a third-round 283 vaulted Minnesota to a fourth-place tie heading into the final round. Under perfect scoring conditions on the final day, the Gophers dominated the field. The Gophers were so good, in fact, that they did not count a 74 from their No. 1 player, Simon Nash, and instead used a 72 from David Morgan, usually the team's No. 5 player.

In addition to Morgan's 72, Justin Smith fired a 69 and Wilhelm Schauman a 71.

"The team's got a bigger heart than any team I've even been with," said Minnesota coach Brad James.

Individually, Georgia Tech's Troy Matteson was the medalist, shooting one stroke better than Texas Christian's Adam Rubinson. Hunter Mahan of Oklahoma State was third. Matteson is Georgia Tech's first individual champion.
