In the end, Cael Sanderson was perfect.
The Iowa State senior completed his record-setting college wrestling career March 23, winning his 159th match without a loss and claiming his fourth straight NCAA title. Minnesota won the team championship.
The 197-pound Sanderson caught Jon Trenge by the ankle, turned it into a double-leg takedown and put the Lehigh sophomore straight to his back for a near fall, going on to score a 12-4 major decision.
More than 13,000 fans at Pepsi Arena in Albany, New York, gave Sanderson a standing ovation that lasted nearly five minutes.
"That's what I was fighting basically, the fear that I would not perform up to my capability," Sanderson said. He was named the tournament's most outstanding wrestler.
"The toughest thing about going undefeated," Sanderson quipped, "is winning all your matches."
Oklahoma State's Pat Smith, who had five losses in his career, is the only other four-time NCAA champion.
Two other Iowa State wrestlers were champions, lifting the Cyclones to second place in the team standings with 104 points.
In the team race, Minnesota won with 126 1/2 points bouyed by two individual titlists. Last year, Minnesota won the team crown without an individual winner. Oklahoma, Iowa and Oklahoma State rounded out this year's top five.
The back-to-back national titles were the first for Minnesota since the Gophers won consecutive football championships in 1940 and 1941.
Jared Lawrence (149 pounds) and Luke Becker (157 pounds) also made school history with their individual titles, marking the first time Minnesota won more than one individual title in a single NCAA championship.
The crowd roared to its feet one other time, right before the Sanderson's historic match, when Lehigh's Rob Rohn came back from a 14-2 deficit in the third period to pin Oklahoma's Josh Lambrecht at in the 184-pound final.
Rohn escaped with a minute to go in the match, caught Lambrecht in a headlock and held him on his back, finally pressing both shoulders down with 15 seconds left.
At 141 pounds, Iowa State's Aaron Holker won a 10-5 decision over Eric Larkin of Arizona State. Iowa State senior Joe Heskett also became a champion, scoring a late takedown to beat Matt Lackey of Illinois at 165 pounds. It was Heskett's third trip to the finals and his first victory.
At 157 pounds, Nebraska senior Bryan Snyder, 33-0 this season heading to the finals, lost to Luke Becker of Minnesota, 5-4, when Becker escaped in the tiebreaker period.
