The NCAA and the administrator of the NCAA insurance policy, Mutual of Omaha, have agreed to modify the benefits available to San Jose State University football player Neil Parry in a way that will allow him to resume his playing career.
The changes will allow Parry to maintain existing NCAA coverage while also playing football. Parry sustained a football injury two years ago that resulted in the amputation of his right leg. Parry, who now wears a prosthetic device, has targeted San Jose State's September 28 home opener against the University of Texas at El Paso as his inspirational comeback.
Previously, under the NCAA catastrophic injury policy, Parry would not have been allowed to play football and also receive benefits because the policy does not provide coverage for a prior injury if an individual is deemed healthy to compete.
"We are very pleased that we were able to come to a resolution that would offer Mr. Parry an opportunity to receive the care he needs and to continue to play football," said NCAA President Cedric W. Dempsey. "This is an extraordinary situation with a unique set of circumstances. Mr. Parry is an extremely courageous individual, and we wish him the best."
