Tennessee used dominating performances from its sprinters to claim its first Division I Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship team title March 8-9 at Arkansas.
The Volunteers earned 62 1/2 points to runner-up Alabama's 47. The Southeastern Conference swept the top four places, as LSU finished third with 44 points and the host Razorbacks came in fourth with 39.
Justin Gatlin won both the 60- and 200-meter dashes to spark Tennessee. He also was the catalyst for the Volunteers' 2001 outdoor title by winning the 100- and 200-meter dashes.
"We want to start a dynasty here," Gatlin said. "My teammates had the feel of a champion today. Every time we step on the track, we want to be a champion."
Leonard Scott contributed 14 Tennessee team points by placing second in the 60-meter dash and third in the 200. In addition, Marc Sylvester was the runner-up in the 400-meter dash and Gary Kikaya was third in the 800-meter run.
"I just had a feeling today," Sylvester said. "There were no jitters at all. When I was warming up, I looked at Justin (Gatlin) and told him I was going to set it up for him."
Gatlin, Kikaya and Scott joined with Dwayne Bell to put the finishing touch on the championship by placing second in the 1,600-meter relay.
"I couldn't be happier for our athletes and coaches," said Tennessee head coach Bill Webb. "Our competitors kept hoping we would stumble, but we never did."
Miguel Pate and Ron Bramlett won individual titles for Alabama. Pate captured the long jump and was second in the triple jump. Bramlett was the first across the finish line in the 60-meter high hurdles.
LSU's Walter Davis was the only repeat champion from 2001, as he won his second straight triple jump title. He also was second in the long jump.
The only meet record also belonged to the Tigers. Alleyene Francique covered the 400-meter dash in 45.58 seconds, shaving two-hundredths of a second off the previous mark. Pete Coley of LSU was second to Francique with a time of 45.62 seconds.
