The NCAA News

Milestones: Jack Smitheran, head baseball coach at the University of California, Riverside, earned his 1,000th career victory in the Highlanders' 9-5 victory over the University of San Diego February 16. Smitheran is 1,000-706-3 over his 32-plus years. Smitheran is one of only 27 coaches to have achieved the 1,000-career win milestone ... Drexel University wrestling coach Jack Childs earned his 300th career win January 17 when his Dragons defeated Rider College. Childs is 307-173-8 in his 26th season at Drexel. Reaching the milepost against Rider was ironic given that Drexel had not beaten the Broncs since 1987 and was 5-20 all-time against them before the win. "I think (the milestone) is due to my longevity rather than my ability," Childs said. "If a wrestling coach finds a home, he tends to nurture that program and stay with his athletes. It's not a lucrative field -- you're not jumping from school to school looking for a raise. You want to see your program grow. Maybe it's the nature of the sport."

Miscellaneous: Syracuse University Director of Athletics Jake Crouthamel was one of five faculty and staff members recognized with the university's Chancellor's Citations in a special ceremony February 25. Crouthamel received the Chancellor's Citation for Distinguished Service. Crouthamel has been at Syracuse since 1978 and has overseen such projects as the construction of the Carrier Dome, the Roy Simmons Sr. Coaches Center and the Lampe Athletics Complex. He currently serves on the Division I Management Council.
