Milestones: A pair of Pennsylvania State University coaches, Emmanuil Kaidanov and Rene Portland, earned milestone 500th victories on February 3. Portland posted her 500th Penn State victory in the Lady Lions basketball team's 95-62 victory over Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio. Fencing coach Kaidanov earned his 500th career win when his fencers went 10-0 at the Brandeis Duals to remain unbeaten this season. Portland and Kaidanov join two other current Penn State coaches, Harry Groves (men's track and field/cross country) and Russ Rose (women's volleyball) as the only mentors in school history to have 500 career victories. With the win at Ohio State, Portland improved to 500-174 in 22 seasons. She has a 587-203 mark in her 26th season overall. "It was a great night for it to happen," Portland said on her milestone win. "Obviously, you can see a lot of players contributed to this win. This is a pretty special team and it is really growing up." Kaidanov entered the Brandeis Duals with 496 wins, and after both the men's and women's teams went 5-0 on the day, he has 506 career wins. His career coaching record now stands at 506-35-1. When asked about the milestone, Kaidanov said, "Five hundred wins or 1,000 wins, what's the difference? Each one is a new one."
