Facilities: A $3 million gift will allow Purdue University to build a $6.5 million tennis center on campus that will include eight indoor courts and six outdoor courts. The facility will be called the Dennis J. and Mary Lou Schwartz Tennis Center and will include indoor concourse seating for 1,000 fans. Dennis Schwartz, a 1963 Purdue graduate, provided the gift. "This new tennis center will attract top caliber student-athletes and position Purdue as an NCAA tennis leader," said Purdue President Martin C. Jischke. Work is scheduled to begin in 2004 and take about a year. Purdue also received $1.8 million in gifts to construct the 11,400-square-foot Tom Spurgeon Golf Training Center, named after lead donor Tom Spurgeon, a 1961 Purdue graduate. The facility will feature an indoor putting green, a swing-analysis video computer system and multiple heated hitting bays. Morgan Burke, Purdue athletics director, said the indoor training center will be the "jewel in the crown" of Purdue's 36-hole Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex ... Construction of Wichita State University's Charles Koch Arena is now "out of the ground" and proceeding on schedule, according to Wichita State Athletics Director Jim Schaus. The construction is part of the school's Roundhouse Renaissance project, a $25 million master plan for the renovation and construction of Wichita State's primary athletics facility, which includes the arena and student services building. The renovation and reconstruction project, which began in March, is on schedule to meet the August 2003 deadline for the arena and team locker rooms, with the remaining areas to be completed on time shortly thereafter. "Our fans are going to love Charles Koch Arena," Schaus said. "The impact for our entire athletics program will be incredible."
