The Division I Men's Golf Committee developed a recommendation for a revised championship format during its annual meeting June 25-27 in Indianapolis.
Currently, the championships are played Wednesday through Saturday. However, the committee will recommend to the Championships/Competition Cabinet that the format change to a Tuesday-through-Friday schedule, using Saturday as an optional rain day. Sunday and Monday are the designated practice days under the proposed format.
In other championships-related matters, the committee made a decision that will expedite the practice rounds and allow more practice opportunities, modifying the one-practice-ball rule to allow golfers to putt multiple balls on the putting green during all practice rounds.
Also, during the 2003 championship, the third and fourth rounds will return to a traditional pairings format, with leaders teeing off last. The 2003 championship will be held May 28-31 at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Oklahoma State University will host.
In a playing rules issue, the golf committee reacted to members of the coaching community who encouraged a rules change that would allow two coaches to give advice to team members during competition. To remain consistent with the USGA rules of golf, which allow either the head coach or any assistant coach who is pre-appointed to advise team members, the committee denied this request and determined that the results of any tournament that allows two coaches to advise team members will not be considered for selection purposes for the regionals.
