The Tigers proved to be tough in their own territory.
LSU became the first host institution to win the team title in the Division I Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships in nearly 20 years May 29-June 1.
A third-place finish in the 1,600-meter relay, the meet's final event, cemented the Tigers' first championship since 1990 and fourth overall. LSU finished with 64 points, followed by defending champion Tennessee with 57.
Oregon was the last school to win at its own facility (in 1984).
Most of the Tigers' winning margin was the result of the two relay events. LSU outscored the Volunteers, 16-10, in the 400- and 1,600-meter relays.
Walter Davis also played a leading role in the Tigers' triumph. He won both the long jump and the triple jump, repeating his 2001 victory in the latter. In addition, Davis joined with Robert Parham, Pete Coley and Bennie Brazell to earn first place in the 400-meter relay.
Claston Bernard gave LSU a third individual title with a come-from-behind win in the decathlon. Bernard trailed Rice's Ryan Harlan by 43 points before the 1,500-meter run, the 10th event, only to outscore Harlan, 732-540, and win the combined competition with 8,094 points.
Tennessee also had three first places individually, with Justin Gatlin recording two in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. He became the first athlete to win both events in back-to-back years since Abilene Christian's Bobby Morrow did so in 1956 and 1957. Gary Kikaya was the Volunteers' other winner in the 400-meter dash.
Davis and Gatlin were two of the three individuals to win two events. Southern Methodist's Janus Robberts sparked the Mustangs to a third-place team finish with 42 points, after capturing the shot put and discus throw events. It was Robberts' third title in the shot put after winning in 1999 and last year.
Georgia's Andras Haklits also became a three-time champion, winning the hammer throw with a heave of 253 feet, 8 inches, on his final attempt. Haklits won the event in 1999 while competing for Louisiana-Monroe, and for Georgia in 2001.
Alabama's Ron Bramlett (110-meter high hurdles), Arkansas' Daniel Lincoln (3,000-meter steeplechase) and South Carolina's Otukile Lekote (800-meter run) each won for the second consecutive year.
