Recruiting/Tryouts

Definition of "Open" Event. A competitive event that permits any participants to be selected on bases unrelated to an objective standard of performance is not considered an "open" event for purposes of NCAA Bylaw 13.12.3.2. Thus, it is permissible for prospective student-athletes to participate in such an event on an institution's campus only if it satisfies one of the other tryout exceptions in Bylaw 13.12.3. [References: Bylaws 13.12.3 (tryout exceptions) and 13.12.3.2 ("open" event).]

Seasons/Fund-raising Activity

Institution Providing Expenses for Fund-Raising Competition. An institution may not provide actual and necessary travel expenses to its student-athletes for the purpose of participating in a fund-raising activity exempted pursuant to NCAA Bylaw 17.__.5.2.2-(h) that occurs outside the state in which the institution is located or, if outside the state, outside a 100-mile radius. However, it is permissible to provide actual and necessary travel expenses pursuant to Bylaw 16.8.1.2 if the institution counts the fund-raising activity against its maximum contest limitations.
