Stanford found itself in familiar territory at the Division I Women's Tennis Championships -- on its home court and at the top of the trophy podium. The second-ranked Cardinal and championships host defeated the favored Florida Gators, 4-1, for its second consecutive title and 12th overall.
A three-hour rain delay postponed the start of the May 19 championship match. When competition finally began, Stanford went on a tear, claiming the doubles point and three of four completed singles matches. The No. 1 doubles spot determined the winner of the doubles point, with Lauren Kalvaria and Gabriela Lastra earning an 8-6 victory over Florida's Lindsay Dawaf and Jessica Lehnhoff.
"It's make or break at that point," Kalvaria said. "Having to come back after losing the doubles point is really tough. Our team really feeds off of winning the doubles point."
Though Florida picked up a point at No. 3 singles, Stanford pushed back with wins at the bottom three spots of the lineup to secure the match. Stanford's Keiko Tokuda, Emilia Anderson and Erin Burdette clinched the victory.
"This has just been an incredible season from start to finish," said Stanford coach Lele Forood. "I think being able to play at home was helpful; we received some great doubles play today and were equally solid in singles. Overall, it was just a tremendous victory for our team."
Stanford added another title in the doubles championship with Kalvaria and Lastra defeating UCLA's Megan Bradley and Lauren Fisher, 6-2, 6-3. It was the Cardinal's first such title since 1990.
"This is incredible and just a dream come true. I wanted this so badly," Lastra said.
In singles, Wake Forest's Bea Bielik used her powerful serve to overwhelm Florida's Lehnhoff, 6-2, 6-0, for the championship. The top-seeded Bielik lost just 21 games in six matches -- a championship record -- to become the first Wake Forest player to win an NCAA tennis title.
