Duke returned to the top in women's golf three years after winning its first title, capturing the Division I Women's Golf Championships May 24 at Washington.

Led by Virada Nirapathpongporn, a sophomore from Thailand, Duke shot a 12-under 1,164 total. Nirapathpongporn won the individual competition, closing with an even-par 72 for a five-stroke victory. Nirapathpongporn's 279 equaled the all-time NCAA women's championship record established by Southern California's Jennifer Rosales in 1998.

Only Arizona and Arizona State, with four apiece, have had more individual medalists than Duke, which is now tied with Texas, Georgia and Tulsa with two.

Arizona's Lorena Ochoa shot a final-round 73 to tie for second with Auburn's Danielle Downey, Georgia's Summer Sirmons and Lindsey Wright of Pepperdine. Ochoa, who lost last year's individual competition in a playoff, set an NCAA record with eight victories this season.

Duke's team title was completed with a one-under-par final round. The Blue Devils won by six strokes over Arizona, Auburn and Texas. Georgia, which beat Duke by three strokes last year, finished fifth.

Besides Nirapathpongporn, Duke also relied on Leigh Anne Hardin, who fired a 72 in the final round to tie for 13th place, and Candy Hannemann, last year's individual champion, who tied for 22nd.
