After winning team titles in 1996 and 1997, Stanford did not suffer much of a decline in the Division I Men's Cross Country Championships. The Cardinal placed second on two occasions, including finishing only a point behind Colorado last year, and ended up fourth in 1999 and 2000.

This year, Stanford had four finishers in the top 10 to secure its third crown November 25 at Indiana State. The Cardinal's team score of 47 points gave them a comfortable 60-point margin over second-place Wisconsin.

"This was a fantastic performance by our men's team," said Stanford director of track and field/cross country Vin Lananna. "This NCAA title brought our entire season into focus. I haven't seen a team dominate like this at this level in quite a while."

Grant Robison was Stanford's leader, placing third with a time of 29 minutes, 36.7 seconds for 10,000 meters. Louis Luchini was fifth and Donald Sage sixth for the Cardinal, with Ian Dobson rounding out the top-10 quartet in ninth place.

"We had high expectations going into the season, but this was amazing for us," said Robison. "Having such a strong team took a lot of the individual pressure off of me."

Matt Tegenkamp led Wisconsin's effort by finishing 12th. Boaz Cheboiywo of Eastern Michigan, the 2001 individual champion, came in seventh and the Eagles placed third in the team standings.

Jorge Torres of Colorado became the Buffaloes' third individual winner with a time of 29 minutes, 4.7 seconds. Torres was second to Cheboiywo last year, and also was runner-up in the 5,000-meter runs at the 2002 Division I indoor and outdoor track and field championships.

"I'm speechless," said Torres, whose brother, Ed, was 10th in this year's race. "I can't put this into words. I'm glad to say that I'm finally a national champion."

Alistair Cragg of Arkansas finished only 1.3 seconds behind Torres, but there was a 30-second gap between Cragg and Robison.
