Additional regional sites selected in men's ice hockey for 2003-04

The Division I Men's Ice Hockey Committee has announced the selection of the two additional regional hosts for the 2003 and 2004 championships. With the field expanding from 12 to 16 teams beginning in 2003, the committee needed to select two additional sites, which were approved by the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet.

"We selected cities and sites that have a tradition of hosting successful events," said Jack McDonald, chair of the Division I Men's Ice Hockey Committee and director of athletics at Quinnipiac University. "We know they will do a great job."

The 2003 Northeast and West regionals will be held March 28 and 29, while the East and Midwest regionals will be held March 29 and 30. The 2003 Men's Frozen Four, which already is sold out, will be held April 10-12 at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York.

The following are sites for 2003: Northeast -- Worcester Centrum Centre, Worcester, Massachusetts, Boston University, host (previously selected); East-- Dunkin Donuts Center, Providence, Rhode Island, Providence College, host; Midwest -- Yost Ice Arena, Ann Arbor, Michigan, University of Michigan, host (previously selected); and West -- Mariucci Arena, Minneapolis, University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, host.

In 2004, the Northeast and West regions will be held March 26 and 27, while the East and Midwest regions will be held March 27 and 28. The 2004 Men's Frozen Four will be held April 8-10 at the FleetCenter in Boston.

The following are sites for 2004: Northeast -- Verizon Wireless Arena, Manchester, New Hampshire, University of New Hampshire, host; East -- Pepsi Arena, Albany, New York, Eastern College Athletic Conference and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, hosts (previously selected); Midwest --Van Andel Arena, Grand Rapids, Michigan, Western Michigan University, host; and West -- World Arena, Colorado Springs, Colorado, Colorado College, host (previously selected).

Each site will host four schools with the winners of the first night of competition playing each other on the second day. Each of the four winners will advance to the Frozen Four. Game times for regional competition will be released at a later date.
