Winter sports championships previews -- Women's Swimming and Diving

The NCAA News

DIVISION I

Dates and site: The championships will be March 21-23 at Texas.

Field: The maximum number of participants allowed is 322. All qualifiers who have met the "A" time standard will be admitted in the meet; those who have met the "B" time standard will be considered until the event is filled. A total of 41 divers will be entered in the championships. No team is allowed more than 18 competitors.

2001 team champion: Georgia.

Top team contenders: Stanford, Georgia, Texas, California, Auburn.

Top individual contenders: Shelly Ripple and Jessica Foschi, Stanford; Ashley Roby and Maritza Correia, Georgia; Erin Phenix, Texas; Natalie Coughlin, California; Maggie Bowen, Auburn.

DIVISION II

Dates and site: The championships will be March 13-16 at the YMCA Aquatic Center in Orlando, Florida.

Field: The meet is open to all qualifiers who have met the NCAA's established minimum standard in an event. Entries are unlimited in number; however, no team is allowed more than 19 competitors.

2001 team champion: Truman.

Top team contenders: Truman, Drury, West Chester, UC San Diego.

Top individual contenders: Kelli Dudley, Truman; Megan Krueger, Drury; Megan Straehle, West Chester; Rosanna Delurgio, UC San Diego.

DIVISION III

Dates and site: The championships will be March 14-16 at the Miami University Sports and Recreation Center in Oxford, Ohio.

Field: The maximum number of participants allowed is 232. All qualifiers who have met the "A" time standard will be admitted in the meet; those who have met the "B" standard will be considered for the field. No team is allowed more than 18 competitors.

2001 team champion: Denison.

Top team contenders: Denison, Kenyon, Emory, Johns Hopkins.

Top individual contenders: Erin Stanley and Tamara Carty, Denison; Elizabeth Galloway, Kenyon; Becky Mutz, Emory; Stephanie Harbeson, Johns Hopkins.

Stanford has won the most Division I titles with eight and has finished at least third every year throughout the entire 21-year history of the meet.
