Spring sports championships previews -- Women's Tennis

DIVISION I

Dates and sites: Regionals will be at campus sites May 10-12. The quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will be May 16-25 at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium at Stanford.

Field: The team championships comprises 64 teams. Individual championships shall consist of 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams.

2001 team champion: Stanford.

2001 individual champions: Singles -- Stanford's Laura Granville graduated and the field is open. In doubles,with Whitney Laiho's graduation, Florida's Jessica Lehnhoff returns with new partner Lindsay Dawaf.

Top team contenders: Georgia, Wake Forest , Florida, Vanderbilt, Stanford.

Top individual contenders: Agata Cioroch, Georgia; Bea Bielik, Wake Forest; Jessica Lehnhoff, Florida; Sarah Riske, Vanderbilt; Lauren Kalvaria, Stanford.

DIVISION II

Dates and sites: Regionals will be at campus sites May 3-5. The quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will be May 9-12 at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, Missouri. Rockhurst will host along with the Kansas City Sports Commission.

Field: The team championship comprises 64 teams. Single-elimination tournaments will be played at 16 regional sites (three or four teams at each site) and the finals site (16-team bracket) to determine the national champion.

2001 champion: Lynn.

Top team contenders: Brigham Young-Hawaii, Armstrong Atlantic, Lynn, Barry, Ouachita Baptist.

Players to watch: Petra Gaspar, Brigham Young-Hawaii; Zsofia Golopencza, Armstrong Atlantic; Monika Mastalirova, Lynn; Gizella Turbok, Barry; Victoria Domina, Ouachita Baptist.

DIVISION III

Dates and sites: Preliminary rounds will be conducted at campus sites of participating institutions May 11-12. The quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will be May 17-22 at Sweet Briar.

Field: The team championship consists of 26 teams. Individual championships consist of 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams. Teams will play a single-elimination tournament to determine the national champion.

2001 team champion: Williams.

2001 individual champions: Singles -- Methodist's Elena Blanina; doubles -- Mary Ellen Gordon and Anusha Natarajan of Emory.

Top team contenders: Emory, Williams, Trinity (Texas), Gustavus Adolphus, Amherst.

Top individual contenders: Mary Ellen Gordon, Emory; Selma Kikic, Williams; Lizzie Yasser, Trinity (Texas); Ellen Anderson, Gustavus Adolphus; Stephanie Fong, Amherst.

A 4-3 win by Georgia over national champion Stanford February 9 snapped the Cardinal's 35-match win streak that dated back to a 2000 NCAA final loss to the Bulldogs.
