Spring sports championships previews -- Women's Golf

DIVISION I

Dates and sites: Three regionals will be conducted May 9-11: East -- LSU, Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Central -- Michigan State, East Lansing, Michigan; and West -- Stanford, Stanford, California. The finals will be held May 21-24 at Washington.

Field: Three 54-hole regionals will be conducted to determine the 126 participants in the championship.

Selection date: April 29.

2001 team champion: Georgia.

2001 individual champion: Candy Hannemann, Duke.

Top team contenders: Auburn, Duke, Tulsa, Texas, Ohio State, Tennessee, Oklahoma State, Arizona, Florida.

Top individual contenders: Lorena Ochoa, Arizona; Stacy Prammanasudh, Tulsa; Katherine Hull, Pepperdine; Courtney Swaim, Auburn.

DIVISION II

Dates and sites: Four regionals will be held May 2-6 at sites to be determined. The finals will be held May 15-18 at The Meadows Golf Club, Allendale, Michigan, with Grand Valley State as host.

Field: Forty-eight student-athletes will compete in 72-holes of competition.

Selection date: April 29.

2001 team champion: Florida Southern.

2001 individual champion: Jana Peterkova, Florida Southern.

Top team contenders: Florida Southern, Rollins, Lynn, Longwood, Mankato State, Western New Mexico, Southwestern Oklahoma State.

Top individual contenders: Jana Peterkova and Rachel Bell, Florida Southern; Freddie Seeholzer, Rollins; Amanda Diamond, Longwood; Svetlana Gounkina, Lynn.

DIVISION III

Dates and sites: The finals will be held May 14-17 at The Orchards Golf Course in South Hadley, Massachusetts, with Mount Holyoke as host.

Field: A total of 10 teams and 10 individuals from five regions will compete for the championship.

Selection date: May 6.

2001 team champion: Methodist.

2001 individual champion: Carol Brogan, Methodist.

Top team contenders: Methodist, Hardin-Simmons, Gustavus Adolphus, Simpson, Franklin, St. Benedict.

Top individual contenders: Michelle Meadows and Hope Thomas, Methodist; Salem Mitchell, Hardin-Simmons; Kathryn Aplin, Gustavus Adolphus.

Florida Southern's Jana Peterkova will be defending her individual title after winning the championship as a freshman.
