Spring sports championships previews -- Men's Track and Field

DIVISION I

Dates and site: The championships will be May 29-June 1 at LSU.

Field: A total of 388 athletes will compete in the championships. Athletes qualify by reaching the automatic and provisional standards established for each event.

Selection date: The spots remaining in the field after the automatic qualifiers are entered will be filled from the descending-order list of provisional qualifiers May 23.

2001 team champion: Tennessee.

Top team contenders: Alabama, LSU, Stanford, Tennessee, TCU.

Athletes to watch: Ron Bramlett, Alabama; Christian Cantwell, Missouri; Walter Davis, LSU; Michael Frater, TCU; Justin Gatlin and Leonard Scott, Tennessee; Daniel Lincoln, Arkansas; Scott Russell, Kansas; Ryan Shay, Notre Dame.

DIVISION II

Dates and site: The championships will be May 23-25 at Angelo State.

Field: A total of 310 athletes will compete in the championships. Athletes qualify by reaching the automatic and provisional standards established for each event.

Selection date: The spots remaining in the field after the automatic qualifiers are entered will be filled from the descending-order list of provisional qualifiers May 14.

2001 team champion: St. Augustine's.

Top team contenders: Abilene Christian, St. Augustine's, Tarleton State, Western State.

Athletes to watch: Kevin Bartlett, Lincoln (Missouri); Olan Coleman, Tarleton State; Arnaldo Cueto, Cal State Bakersfield; Josh Eberly, Western State; John Kemboi and Terrance Woods, Abilene Christian; Anwar Moore, St. Augustine's; Orville Taylor, New York Tech.

DIVISION III

Dates and site: The championships will be May 23-25 at Macalester.

Field: A total of 334 athletes will compete in the championships. Athletes qualify by reaching the automatic and provisional standards established for each event.

Selection date: The spots remaining in the field after the automatic qualifiers are entered will be filled from the descending-order list of provisional qualifiers May 20.

2001 team champion: Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Top team contenders: Calvin, Lincoln (Pennsylvania), North Central, Wisconsin-La Crosse, Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Athletes to watch: Chaz Clemons, Lincoln (Pennsylvania); J. B. Haglund, Haverford; David Juiliano, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps; Joel Klooster, Calvin; Kurt Malnar, Wisconsin-Whitewater; Justin Rapp, North Central; Andrew Rock and Charlie Wittleder, Wisconsin-La Crosse; Peter Wagner, Central (Iowa).

There have been ties for the team championships just one time in both Divisions II and III. Eastern Illinois and Norfolk State shared the Division II crown in 1974, and Lincoln (Pennsylvania) and North Central were Division III co-champions in 2000.
