Spring sports championships previews -- Men's Lacrosse

DIVISION I

Dates and sites: First-round competition for the North site is May 11 at Brown; the South site date is May 12 at Delaware. North quarterfinal competition is May 18 at Hofstra; South quarterfinals are May 13 at Johns Hopkins. The semifinals (May 25) and the championship game (May 27) are at Rutgers.

Field: This is a 12-team single-elimination tournament. One team is selected from each of the three geographical regions -- Northeast, Southeast and West. Six conference champions receive automatic qualification. The remaining six teams are selected at large.

Selection date: May 5.

2001 champion: Princeton.

Top team contenders: Virginia, Syracuse, Loyola (Maryland), Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, Maryland, North Carolina.

Players to watch: Mike Powell, Syracuse; Conor Gill, Virginia; Bobby Benson, Johns Hopkins; Steve Dusseau, Georgetown; Mike Howley, Maryland; Kyle Campbell, Towson.

DIVISION II

Dates and sites: Semifinals are May 19 on campus and the championship game is May 26 at Rutgers' Yurcak Field.

Field: This is a four-team, single-elimination tournament. Two teams will be selected from each of the two regions, Northeast and Southwest.

Selection date: May 5.

2001 champion: Adelphi.

Top team contenders: Le Moyne, Adelphi, C.W. Post, New York Tech, Limestone.

Players to watch: Nick Carlson and Devan Spilker, Limestone; Drew Cavadias, C.W. Post; Paul Chamoun, Le Moyne; Nick Gotta, Adelphi.

DIVISION III

Dates and sites: First-round games, quarterfinals and semifinals are May 8, 12 and 19, respectively, all on campus of one of the competing teams. The championship game is at Rutgers Stadium May 27.

Field: Sixteen teams are selected. The first 12 berths go to the champions of the automatic-qualifying conferences. Two berths go to true independents and teams from conferences without automatic qualification for their champion. The remaining two berths are for teams from conferences with automatic qualification that did not win their conference.

Selection date: May 5.

2001 champion: Middlebury.

Top team contenders: Middlebury, Gettysburg, Cortland State, Washington (Maryland), Washington and Lee, Nazareth, Salisbury.

Players to watch: David Seeley, Middlebury; Pete Milliman, Gettysburg; Peter Royer, Denison; Justin Mendelson, Cortland State; P. J. Rosecrans, Nazareth.

Johns Hopkins (29 years), Virginia (25), Maryland (25), Syracuse (21), Navy (20) and North Carolina (20) lead Division I schools in championship appearances. Johns Hopkins, with seven, and Syracuse, with six, are the leading title winners in the 31-year history of the event.
