The NCAA has selected the second class of athletics administrators to participate in the Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Males.
Now in its second year, the Institute is designed as a model for current athletics administrators to receive training and acquire skill sets necessary to advance to leadership roles in athletics. The program is the result of a recommendation from the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee to address the shortage of senior-level ethnic minority males involved at the campus and conference levels.
The Leadership Institute will enhance job-related competencies in selected areas through the completion of four professional-development sessions, practical work experiences and a week-long intensive workshop. This year's program is based on a 12-month schedule as opposed to the 14-month schedule last year.
The first professional-development session -- Leadership and Administration -- will be conducted June 28-30 at the NCAA Conference Center in Indianapolis. The session focuses on shaping an organizational vision, managing change, strategic planing, and working with boards and committees.
Subsequent sessions on human resource management (August 9-12), finance and fund-raising (November 1-3), and booster, public and media relations (February 7-9, 2003) also will be held in Indianapolis. The week-long workshop is scheduled for June 23-27, 2003, and will focus on the practical implications of the workshop areas through review and discussion of case studies.
Rochelle Collins, NCAA director of professional development, said the first class of participants that will "graduate" this summer has set a high standard for subsequent classes to meet.
"The Institute is off to a tremendous start," Collins said. "The goals of the program are being met in that the participants are learning the competencies required to assume leadership roles at their institutions. The first class received the curriculum enthusiastically, and we expect the second class to do the same."
To be eligible for the Leadership Institute, staff members must be nominated from NCAA institutions and conferences. Upon selection, institutions and conferences must provide travel and lodging costs, and assist the staff member in completion of practical assignments that enhance the understanding and application of the content areas. Upon completion of the Institute, participants are eligible to apply for a $2,000 scholarship to defray costs incurred during the 12-month Institute period.
Nominations for the 2003-04 Leadership Institute will be solicited in January 2003.
