The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) has announced programming for the 2002 NACDA Management/Leadership Institute June 19-22 in Dallas. The Institute will follow NACDA's 37th annual convention.
The three-level program offers instruction on issues relevant to athletics administrators. Level I introduces the principles of management and leadership, while Level II features segments based on the Franklin Covey series. Level III presents a range of topics vital to the success of any collegiate athletics program.
The Institute will open with a "President/ADs Panel," which incorporates all three levels. The session will address the relationship between a university president and the athletics department. Leading the session will be Southern Methodist University President Gerald Turner and Athletics Director and NACDA Past President Jim Copeland, also of Southern Methodist.
Level I instructors will include Dave Hart Jr., director of athletics at Florida State University; Jack Lengyel, interim director of athletics at Temple University; Mike Lude, retired director of athletics at the University of Washington; and Homer Rice, retired athletics director and professor at Georgia Institute of Technology. All are past presidents of NACDA. Topics for the sessions are the "Importance of Little Things in Organization and Communication," "Lessons for Leaders," "Current Issues in Athletics" and "Principles of Management."
Level II, titled "The Leadership and Professional Conduct of Athletics Administration," focuses on the key roles necessary for competent, effective leadership. The ability to integrate the principles of leadership with professionalism and integrity will be taught by Dutch Baughman, executive director of the Division I-A Athletics Directors Association.
The advanced level features sessions on "Marketing, Media Relations and Licensing," "A Functional Decision-Making Model for Athletics Administrators," "The Athletics Director as a Leader in Development," and "Survival 101: How to Survive as an Athletics Director." Arizona State University Athletics Director Gene Smith will conduct the sessions with Mark Dienhart, vice president/external relations at the University of St. Thomas (Minnesota); Sheila Smith, senior development consultant at Arizona State; and Vince Sweeney, associate athletics director for external relations at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
As in the past, only NACDA members in good standing may register for the Institute. Additional information on the Management/Leadership Institute is available on the NACDA Web site at www.nacda.com.
Registration for the Management/Leadership Institute is $300. Registrants must attend Level I before advancing. In addition, individuals who attend NACDA's Management/Leadership Institute will receive a $500 reduction in tuition for the Sports Management Institute. NACDA also is continuing its partnership with NCAA Division III, which offers a $1,000 scholarship for Division III ethnic minority males to attend the Institute.
