The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) is celebrating the 10th anniversary year of the NACDA Directors' Cup, the national all-sports awards and scholarship program owned and operated by NACDA.
The NACDA Directors' Cup is the first cross-sectional all-sports national recognition award for both men and women. It was developed in 1993-94 by NACDA and USA Today as the all-sports award for Division I. The program was expanded in 1995-96 to include Divisions II and III and the NAIA.
"The NACDA Directors' Cup has become the measuring stick by which colleges and universities evaluate their athletics programs' postseason success," said NACDA President Joe Castiglione, director of athletics at the University of Oklahoma. "It is symbolic of athletics excellence. We have a rich history with the program and look for the significance of the NACDA Directors' Cup to continue."
NACDA enters the second decade of the program with changes to the scoring structure and scholarship program. There are four significant changes in the scoring.
Minimum bracket size. Previously, all sports in which the NCAA or NAIA offered a championship were included in the standings. This year, championships must have a minimum of 12 teams in the championship field to be included in the standings.
Maximum bracket size. Previously, points were awarded only to the top 64 teams in each championship (65 in Division I men's basketball). Now, a minimum of five points will be awarded to any team that competes in a recognized championship. All teams that place 65th or lower will earn five points.
Points awarded. The amount of points awarded in the team and individual brackets has been modified. First place for all sports remains the same at 100 points. However, points awarded in the team brackets have been increased. The minimum points awarded in a sport scored from the team bracket will now be 25 (up from 20 last season).
Track and field. Only one result for track and field will be included in the standings, either the indoor or the outdoor results. The result in which the school receives the most points will be used. Last year in Division I only, both results were tabulated.
The scholarship program will now recognize the academic and athletics excellence of student-athletes at NACDA-member institutions. Close to $200,000 in scholarships will be awarded annually. There are 20 $5,000 scholarships, five per division (including one to a student-athlete at the school that wins the NACDA Directors' Cup). Additionally, $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to student-athletes at each NACDA-member school that wins an NCAA or NAIA championship in a Directors' Cup recognized sport.
