Division I
Dates and sites: Preliminary-round games will be played at campus sites -- first-round games by November 15, second-round games by November 17, third-round games either November 22, 23 or 24 and quarterfinals either November 29, 30 or December 1. The semifinals and final will be December 6 and 8 at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
Field: The championship is a 64-team single-elimination bracket. Twenty-eight conferences receive automatic qualification. The remaining teams are selected at large.
Selection date: November 11.
2001 champion: Santa Clara.
Top team contenders: North Carolina, Stanford, Portland, Texas, UCLA.
Players to watch: Aly Wagner (Santa Clara); Christine Sinclair (Portland); Christie Welsh (Penn State); Alyssa Ramsey (North Carolina).
Division II
Dates and sites: All games will be played at campus sites -- first-round games November 13, second-round games November 16 or 17 and quarterfinals November 23 or 24. The semifinals and final will be played December 6 and 8 on the campus of participating institution.
Field: The championship comprises a 24-team single-elimination tournament. Three teams will be selected from each of eight regions.
Selection date: November 10.
2001 champion: UC San Diego.
Top team contenders: Northern Kentucky, Franklin Pierce, Christian Brothers, Barry.
Players to watch: Missy Gregg and Margaret Saurin (Christian Brothers); Stephanie Sandfoss (Northern Kentucky); Meghan Welcome (Franklin Pierce).
Division III
Dates and sites: All games will be played at campus sites -- first-round games November 13, regionals November 16-17 and quarterfinals November 23 or 24. The semifinals and final will be played November 30 and December 1 on the campus of participating institution.
Field: The championship comprises a 45-team single-elimination tournament. Teams will be placed in eight competition brackets consisting of no more than six teams. Nineteen teams will receive a bye into the regionals.
Selection date: November 10.
2001 champion: Ohio Wesleyan.
Top team contenders: Ohio Wesleyan, Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Trinity (Texas).
Players to watch: Mindy Hammond and Akeya Terrell (Ohio Wesleyan); Kelly Fink (Wisconsin-Stevens Point); Lindsay Rowland [Trinity (Texas)].
