Grants have been awarded for Divisions II and III programs intended to enhance gender and ethnic diversity in athletics administration.
The Division II Strategic Alliance Matching Grant Enhancement Program awarded funds to six institutions, which are listed on page 14. The Division II matching grant program requires increasing institutional financial commitment over a five-year period. It was piloted in 2000 and is now funded at $500,000 annually.
Division III is in the first year of a similar matching grant program that spans three years and is funded annually at $650,000. Seventeen institutions were selected and are listed on page 17.
Division III also identified 15 institutions and four conference offices to receive Ethnic Minority and Women's Internship Grants. The grants are for two years and are each valued at $15,000 annually. Recipients are listed on page 17.

Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, assistant director of championships and business operations: This person will be responsible for assisting with the management of cash and ticket collections from the CIAA basketball tournament and football championship, the development of annual budgets, the management and marketing of 16 conference championships, and the development of CIAA compliance workshops. Fort Hays State University, assistant senior woman administrator for compliance and student-athlete services. This person will develop a mentoring program for women and ethnic minorities interested in sports administration. This individual also will be responsible for eligibility regulations, personnel recommendations, approving grants-in-aid, providing academic support, tutoring, interviewing student-athlete tutors, managing study halls and monitoring student-athlete progress. Other responsibilities include providing counseling and advising, coordination of the institution's life skills program and registration, career planning and monitoring the grades for more than 400 student-athletes. Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania, assistant director of athletics/senior woman administrator. This person will provide academic counseling to student-athletes; teach a diversity or women's issues class; evaluate and select proprietary event management software; plan, organize and manage athletics events; and assist the coaching staff, university and administration with Title IX compliance, event marketing, and promotions. Other responsibilities will include expanding the athletics department with programs such as CHAMPS/Life Skills, alcohol awareness and degree completion. Lynn University, associate director of athletics for internal operations/compliance and senior woman administrator. The person in this position will plan and manage internal operations of 13 sports programs; provide leadership in evaluation planning and development of the athletics program and facilities; administer NCAA and Title IX compliance programs; and oversee certification of initial, continuing and transfer eligibility for 200 student-athletes. Minnesota State University Moorhead, senior woman administrator/assistant director of athletics. This person will assist in the development of an annual budget, assist in fund-raising, manage corporate "wheels club," coordinate corporate billings and benefits exchange, supervise concession operations, and monitor and advise the NCAA compliance coordinator. Other responsibilities include monitoring equipment operations, overseeing the campus Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and life skills program, assisting with alumni events and community outreach programs, serving as the senior woman administrator and assisting the director of athletics and event manager. University of Nebraska, Omaha, academic coordinator/life skills coordinator. This person will have a direct impact on student-athletes by helping them obtain summer internships, scheduling tutors, focusing on the life skills program, assisting with the academic resource room and serving as an advisor for the student-athlete advisory board and as a liaison for the executive staff and athletics committees. Nazareth College, student-athlete welfare assistant. The person will serve on the APPLE team, assist the Student-Athlete Mentor Program and the SAMS/PEER theater group, serve on the Student Diversity Committee, coordinate community programs, teach a life skills course and assist the substance abuse educational specialist. New Jersey City University, assistant athletics academic counselor/associate head coach of women's cross country. This person will do academic advising, serve as a liaison between the athletics department and various academic departments, and serve as associate coach of the cross country team. Randolph-Macon Woman's College, assistant sports information director. This person will assist with media relations, press releases, statistics, recruiting, Web site management, budget work and event promotion. Contact: Valerie Cushman (434/947-8286).
University of Redlands, assistant to the director, student-athlete support services. This person will serve as a liaison between the department of athletics and the offices of student services and will take a leadership role with CHAMPS/Life Skills. He or she also will assist the student-athlete advisory committee and the newly founded Multicultural Center and work with the Office of Community Service and Career Services. Rhodes College, sports information/operations intern. The person in this position will assist in the coordination of media coverage and statistics, press releases, media guides and game-day programs; train and schedule student workers; maintain the Web site; manage events; and be responsible for facility operations and marketing/promotions. Smith College, marketing/promotions and special events coordinator. This person will direct event management operations, develop and implement a comprehensive marketing plan for the department of athletics, and manage the new student-athlete orientation program. Springfield College, athletics administration intern. The person will assist and monitor student-athletes' academic progress, serve as a liaison with other academic-support organizations, assist the CHAMPS/Life Skills and SPIRIT programs, attend all conference meetings, and assist the director of athletics in compliance and eligibility, marketing and promotions and event management. Tufts University, assistant to the assistant director of athletics. Washington and Lee University, assistant to the senior associate athletics director/assistant women's soccer coach or assistant field hockey coach. Wittenberg University, athletics administrative intern. City University of New York Athletic Conference, media relations and championship intern. This person will perform sports administration for conference tournaments and championships and coordinate the conference Web site, marketing and promotions, fund-raising and media relations. Eastern College Athletic Conference, ECAC Division III ice hockey leagues administrator. This person will manage five men's and women's hockey leagues, including developing press releases and working with the commissioner on league issues and coordinating postseason championships. Middle Atlantic States Athletic Corporation Conference, office intern. This person will process results and statistics and assist with media guides, media sources, conference records, one conference championship per season and Web site maintenance. Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, assistant to the commissioner. This person will work in championships, governance, sports information, rules compliance, educational and enforcement, budgeting, marketing, awards and officiating issues. * Albion College, assistant athletic trainer: This person will have responsibilities with setting up practice and game coverage. He or she will be responsible for field and facility safety management, ordering supplies, recommending the purchase of major equipment items, and securing bids on that equipment. * Aurora University, athletics business manager/compliance officer: This person will be responsible for tracking more than 30 operating and restricted budgets within the athletics department. He or she will process game receipts and handle payment of game officials and the operations staff support. Averett University, assistant athletic trainer: This person will be responsible for assisting the head athletic trainer in all training room functions, including performing exercise prescription, therapeutic modality usage, injury assessment and program administration. Chestnut Hill College, associate director of student-athlete relations: This person will provide support to student-athletes' physical well-being by administering rehabilitative programs for injured student-athletes, presiding over practices, collaborating in design of fitness-center renovations, and administering the athletic training budget. He or she will provide compliance support by communicating regularly with student-athletes, transfer students, academic advisors, the college registrar and the president of the college and her cabinet. Defiance College, assistant athletic trainer: Responsibilities will include assisting the head athletic trainer with administration of the athletic training program, serving as the primary athletic trainer for specific events, assisting in supervising student-athletic trainers during clinics, serving as a counselor for student-trainers, serving as the leader for the student trainers service learning project, and teaching a beginning training class. Eastern Connecticut State University, assistant athletics director for student-athlete development: This person will assist the athletics director in developing and managing programs and policies specific to the academic development of student-athletes, including the following: managing the academic enhancement program, coordinating the department's CHAMPS/Life Skills Program, and supporting efforts in evaluating and implementing Title IX and gender-equity goals. Hendrix College, senior woman administrator and head women's volleyball program coach: This person will be the SWA and compliance coordinator and serve as a member of the athletics department senior management team. This person will be a direct supervisor for the men's and women's golf and tennis coaches, will develop a comprehensive life skills program, and will serve as the advisor for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Juniata College, athletics development and marketing coordinator: This individual will have direct responsibility for the overall coordination of all athletics department fund-raising, including campaigns for capital improvements. Responsibilities will include developing, recommending and implementing ways to increase the unrestricted gifts for day-to-day support, conducting endowment campaigns for various sports, and starting an annual golf tournament. This person will coordinate and approve the budget for summer camps; serve as the liaison among coaches, facility services and the business office; and assist coaches in developing budgets and marketing. Neumann College, sports information director: This individual will have responsibilities to expand the college's presence in surrounding communities. He or she will work closely with the director of athletics and the assistant athletics director to improve the visibility of athletics. Those efforts will be accomplished by publishing media guides, creating recruiting brochures, maintaining the Neumann College athletics Web page, creating game-day programs, working with the college's public relations department, creating and distributing press releases and features to local media, and preparing statistical reports. New England College, coordinator of athletics support services: This person will be responsible for the development of the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program, serving as liaison to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, assisting in achievement of departmental gender-equity and diversity goals, and serving as athletics department business officer. Nichols College, senior woman administrator: As SWA, this person will have responsibilities for monitoring academic progress of student-athletes, generating communication vehicles, administering compliance and eligibility processes, leading orientation sessions to assist and mentor coaches, and assisting with daily administrative tasks within the athletics department. Regis College (Massachusetts), head soccer coach/sports information director: This person will serve as head soccer coach and as the sports information director, with responsibility for administering the athletics Web site. Contact: Judith Burling (781/768-7147).
Roger Williams University, assistant director of athletics/senior woman administrator/women's basketball coach: This individual's primary function will be to serve as SWA and be a resource to female student-athletes and coaches. This person will serve as compliance officer and be responsible for rules education and enforcement. She will supervise all student-athlete related groups and work with other departments across campus. This individual also will play a critical role in assisting the director of athletics with policy formulation, strategic planning and other crucial aspects of athletics department management. Washington and Lee University, assistant director of athletics: This individual will oversee the Student-Athlete Mentors programs (SAMs), assist the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and assist the senior associate director of athletics and associate director of athletics with club sports and intramural offerings, facilities scheduling, assignment of classes, administration of physical education grades, development of curriculum in conjunction with the instructional staff and annual review of the department policy manual. He or she also will oversee recruitment mailings, coordinate NCAA orientation and compliance sessions, create a proposal for the NCAA Speakers Grant, serve on the University Fitness Center committee, work with the Student Health Center, and serve on staff selection committees. Western New England College, community-outreach coordinator: The community-outreach coordinator will be responsible for coordinating community-outreach programming that involves 19 men's and women's athletics teams, the Student Athlete-Advisory Committee and the Captain's Council. He or she will report directly to the assistant athletics director/senior woman administrator and will work closely with the athletics administrators, coaches and the director of Learning Beyond the Classroom as well as to maintain good communications with the college's director of community relations. Worcester State College, staff assistant/athletic trainer/CHAMPS-Life Skills coordinator: This person will be responsible for assisting in planning, organizing and directing the sports medicine program; preventing and providing treatment for athletics injuries; planning and directing the application process for the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program; and coordinating an advisory team to support the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. He or she will support coaches and their efforts to retain student-athletes and will assist the head athletic trainer in record-keeping, providing coverage at varsity games, and assisting in operation and management of the training room. Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, sports information director: The responsibilities will include compiling and distributing via the Web site statistical releases pertaining to the sports in season, updating and maintaining conference records and statistics, and composing and publishing the conference directory and other publications. This individual also will organize the all-conference selection process and assist the commissioner with conference office marketing and promotions.
