ESPN and the NCAA have reached an 11-year agreement for broadcasting rights to the Division I Women's Basketball Championship. The agreement will run through 2013. The contract, which was announced July 5, also grants ESPN television rights for 20 other championships.
The contract includes a number of improvements for exposure of the Division I Women's Basketball Championship, including a proposed date change for Women's Final Four semifinals and championship game from a Friday-Sunday format to Sunday-Tuesday. ESPN will expand its coverage to all 63 tournament games.

The NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee has selected Indianapolis, Boston and Cleveland as the sites for the 2005, 2006 and 2007 NCAA Women's Final Fours. All three will be first-time sites.
The 2005 Women's Final Four in Indianapolis will be conducted either in Conseco Fieldhouse (18,697) or the RCA Dome (37,263). The Division I Women's Basketball Committee will make that decision at its 2002 summer meeting. The 2006 Women's Final Four -- the 25th anniversary championship -- will be at Boston's Fleet Center (18,560).
The 2002 Women's Final Four will be March 29 and 31 at San Antonio's Alamodome (29,619). It will be the first time for the event in a domed facility.

In the wake of favorable legal decisions, the Division I Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet has assigned greater urgency to its ongoing review of initial- and continuing-eligibility standards.
Though the cabinet, which met June 20-22 in San Francisco, has not recommended that any modifications be made to the current Division I Prop 16 standard, two of its subcommittees are reviewing data that could lead to change.
The cabinet's initial- and continuing-eligibility subcommittees studied data that may indicate a link between initial and continuing eligibility. What has been discussed is to weight high-school academic parameters differently (test scores, high-school core courses and core-course grade-point average currently are weighted equally) in order to perhaps increase access and rely more on continuing-eligibility standards in college to better predict college graduation.
